Default Fast for silvers/ slow for kings?

I have been fishing out of Illwaco for the past few weeks with great sucess for silvers. Any truth to the rumor that silvers like a fast trolled herring or anchovie wile the kings prefer a slower presentation in a wider roll? Fact or fiction? Luck of the draw? Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks in advance...DB

I think that's a little more truth than rumor, but I've seen a lot of exceptions to it.

I would have to agree with Rt. I have had good sucess speed trolling for silvers in the prop wash once the fish have been located. I prefer a tight roll for my king baits fished slow.

My brother and I used to fish a lot out of Trinidad about 80 miles south of the CA/OR border. Had an old, tempermental, 45 horse Chrysler that once the carb was adjusted right would troll like a gem, nice and slow. We used exclusively anchovies down there, and would tune these to run straight (no roll at all). Would fish for Chinook early by trollong slow and never touch a silver. About 9 or 10, little brother would reach down and open the motor up to about 1/4 full throttle. Almost without fail, we would limit the boat with silvers in about an hour and head for the rocks and bottom fish the rest of the day. So the slow for nooks, fast for silvers approach is pretty much gospel in my book. Like RT says though, there are exceptions. One day, following this same pattern, we started trolling fast in toward the rocks. Had 7 silvers in the boat and looking for one more before starting the days bottom fishing. My buddy's rod doubled up with a 27 pound chinook ane we were trolling very fast. Guess luck comes into play too a lot of the time.

IMHO,
Optimum speed for nooks' is 1.8 to 2.0 MPH, silvers 2.5 to 3.0 MPH. Silvers love to chase and nooks' are basically lazy. Although I have picked up the occaisional nook' trollin' fast. You pegged it on the roll of the herring also, slow roll for nooks', fast for the silvers. For a real fun time run a fly on the surface at first light at 3 to 4 MPH and watch the silvers get airborne to hit it.
Good luck and tight lines, Jeff

My Dad told me once it doesn't matter how fast or slow you go,He said do you really think you can out run that fish? he'll go a lot faster than we can,if he decides he wants that bait he will get it ...guess I need to row faster
Obviously I don't know enough about trolling to be of any help
Thats why I hang out with Jeffhead
