Default Alternate Salmon Fishing Locations

Not to jump the gun or anything but I want to start making plans for salmon fishing this year. With the pending doom and possibility that they will close most of the coast this year I want to start looking at alternatives. I would imagine that if the North Coast gets a season and the rest of the coast does not that the pressure will be overwhelming. Not to mention that the quota will disappear very quickly. So how about other locations? Westport, BC, or others? What are your favorites?

Westport, La Push, and Neah Bay can all be very good. Westport is only about 90 something miles from where I live so it's the best option for me. We had a great year for salmon in 2005 although it got off to a very slow start. The sound is OK, but you really have to have the timing and locations down to be succesful.

And you guys laughed at me when I bought a horse. I guess I'm going to do a lot of riding this summer. Maybe some high lakes with a light little flyrod.

Actually Vancouver Island would be my choice, way up on the north end around Port Hardy or Quatsino Sound. I think the lower end around Tofino will be pretty crowded this year.

Just my guess.

A River Camp on the Nushagak for a week would be my choice.

What exactly are those fish? Oh thats right my Grandfather use to tell me about fishing for those. He even would tell me stories about catching and eating your own fish. Of course my Grandfather was a cautious fellow and would only tell me these stories in a low whisper with the radio up loud. He did not want the PETA police or the PFMC to hear him!

" End of the line "
Is the title of a painting done by a fellow fisherman.
Its was his rendition of the tragic fate of the pacific salmon.
It is a futuristic scene with some sort of hover craft trolling long lines ...
Disturbed me when I saw it and will never forget it .

What will salmon fishing be in 50 years ,,,,scary thought ,,,,
I hope my grandkids can fish for them ....
North west coast Vancouver Island. Gets my nod...

Well it sounds like BC gets a big vote. Anywhere else? maybe something closer. Also is the fishing technique about the same in BC as we do here? Anything special we should know before going? Anyone have suggestions on water depth, bait depth, and type of bait? How about GPS coordinates? I love new fisheries plus I could squeeze in some diving whle in the area. Thanks for all the help.

Megabites :
Unfortunately I haven't had any lucking diving around Barkley Sound. Most of the diving there is done in the winter. The upwellings create massive plankton blooms and the visibility is usually only a few inches in the summer. I found that it usually clears once you get under 35 feet. I was diving last year and it was peas soup all the way down to 70 feet and below that, it was pitch black.

Fishing on the other hand is great. The rocks and islands close in, have been pretty picked over for lings and rock fish by the party boats out of Ucluelet. However salmon fishing on the inside around Chrow Island, Cree Island, and Swale Rock is pretty consistent. If you get up early there are plenty of offshore banks under 15 miles from sheltered water. Unless you have a lot of boat I would try and get back inside by noon or one. Almost every day the wind really picks up by mid afternoon.

Inside Barkley Sound, the clamming is great and there are oysters everywhere. If your diving, there are plenty of rock scallops since there is almost no diving pressure up there. I prefer the diving at Neah Bay but the fishing off of the WCVI is well worth the drive boat trip.
