Newport CHINOOKS
If you don't like the crowds go to the inside the plie. Today we released a small 'nook and caught a 23 and 20 pounder, also lost a dandy. The silvers were as thick as ever and on the way out we hit a ball of bait and the prop went bump and when we went back to see what we hit there was a silver floating. That is how many silvers there are, we started seeing fish about 8 miles out and there were silver EVERYWHERE, they should have a Aug. season now that most are 12 plus rather than the 4 pounders caught in early July.

wak'm&stak'm-
Sounds like a good opportunity to kill'em&grill'em! Do you have a lon. / lat. coordinate you might want to share? Been trying to get an accurate fix on the rockpile via maps and stuff but the numbers are too far apart to be accurate. Been out there on other boats, now havew my own and need GPS info. How was the water? Bouy data indicated 4-5 ft swell with 3-4 ft wind waves. did this match what you saw this morning? Also any info on method / depth would be appreciated! Thanks, TM

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
I check the bouy report each time and yesterday was perfect the swells were real long and slow I could get up and run wide open, it only took 30 minutes and I was fishing. It stayed foggy all day but not to bad. Where I went is N44 32.014 and W124 21.981 I have been in this area all year and had great fishing, the reason I have these numbers is there is a ledge and I have caught halibut there. If you look on a map you will see it is inside the south pile and just north you will see the canyon (a deep spot between the piles. There were a number of commercial boats pull some nice fish they would go up towards the canyon and then go south about a 1/2 mile below the spot I gave you. I f you go west you will shallow up to about 170' for some bottom fish.
I started fishing 1 mile before the spot and had fish on before I could get the line clipped in the release then I trolled thru the spot and ended up about a 1/2 mile south.
The fish had BIG herring in their stomachs, I used plug cuts but whole green label worked fine just take lots of bait, I went thru 5 dozen in 3 hours, as an indication of how many fish there are.
Good luck, another good source of ocean conditions is by calling the weather recording at the coastguard station ph.541 265 5511
Let us know how you do if you go, I have to go back to work YUK......

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
Wak'm,
One day soon, I'd like to follow you out of Newport just to learn the ropes. I grew up fishing the ocean with my dad out of Humboldt Bay, so am no rookie to bar crossings or ocean sense. Would just be nice to have an ol' salt show me the ropes before taking it on myself. Drop me an e-mail if you get a chance, keith.black@wcom.com.

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
Thanks for the info! Been DYING to get out there but can't seem to get anybody to get their butts out of bed in the mornings to go with me! My motto is you can sleep when your dead! I know the canyon you are referring to and am plugging in the numbers with your name as the waypoint as soon as I send this reply. I think I'll work real hard tommorrow and try to play hookie Wed. a.m. Thanks again for the help.
Todd
Here's a pic of a buddy & myself with a couple of "boots" we caught real near your spot a few years ago:

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
My those are large ugly red fish, they sure come up easy after they get up half way dont they. Even if they come unhooked they pop to the surface.
I am hoping for good weather Thurs. if you go let me know how you did dheckert@newportnet.com
I live on the beach just north of the lighthouse and it is foggy right now and a 10 mile an hour wind. If you ever need a up to date looksy call, 2655904.
Later Dan

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
Looks like I will be denied once again from pursuing the mighty King! Job went south and can't go on Wed., but I WILL be going on Sun for sure (unless I'm dead).
Them Red things were just downright awful to eat, were supposed to be halibut fishing when we got into them. they float from along ways out! never could find a way to soften 'em up for eating. 50% head, 40% gut!
As far as the conditions report, Thanks, may be calling ya. Pretty dialed as far as C.G. #'s and bouy data but some times they don't tell the whole story. Please let me know what goes on with you on thurs. if you make it. You must be self-unemployed too to be able to get out as much as you seem. BTW - The numbers you posted earlier look great, thanks a bunch.

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
I wish I were self employeed, actually I work four 21 hour days and 4 off in a papermill. With 6 vacations this gives me 216 days off a year and the fish still bite best on the150 days I work. I will stay in touch.
There is a bit of a lump this morning and I guy may squeeze a couple of hours out of it but not worth the trouble.

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
Wak'm, wondered if you are getting by with off the shelf sport down-riggers. I know some of the commercial guys are trolling pretty deep. Any recommendations? thanks, dww

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
I just use Scotty strongarms with 32" boom and 12 pound wts. I am limited to 200ft though. That still put me within 30 ft of the bottom and I can hit in most places. I was watching commercials the other day and most fish were on the 2nd spread down. I went to the bottom a lot and caught silver bouncing the bottom and the nooks were about 40 ft. This is true to what was happening during the silver season as well, there were a lot of nooks caught on the surface. But that stands to reason since that is where the bait was.
To those who care the wind has stopped and the ocean is laying down just fine...Tomorrow morning at 6 I leave the dock in south beach launch. RJ from the post is hoping in also.
I am jazzed and ready yipeeee....
I'll post the results tomorrow on this page. Son of oakie are you going? I will look for you and check here before I go.
I hope the weather holds

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
We're back......BARF-O....it never calm down it went to 8 foot and steep on the ole bouy report. I lost salty dog status plus breakfast...YUK
We couldn't get past the silvers to catch nooks, we would have a silver on before you could get the line in the downrigger release.
Maybe next time.

Re: Newport CHINOOKS
Why id it happen,
and what could it be,
that made me barf,
in the big blue sea,
Try and think hard,
and don't strain you brain,
But was I hanging with my head,
by the drain.
If you can't remember,
well I will remind you young feller'
It was your freeak'n fish
That was caught in the propeller.
Love Barfo
