Default My Saturday B-10 report

I fished Bouy 10 today for the first time ever. I got a full limit of small black animal with white stripe. Tomato bath time.

Launched in the dark at FT Canby state park. found my way out into the channel at first light. having never been there Bouy 10 was quite easy to find, just follow EVERYBODY. Right after first light I had two big hits, losing 1/2 a herring both times. Couldn't get a hook into any meat. I only saw 1 fish caught before noon. Extremely slow on the outgoing tide.

A couple hours after daylight it got to rough for me and I moved back to Bouy 11. Listening to Ch 16 I heard "capsized boat 5 in the water" about 5 minutes after I moved out of the rough water. All 5 were promptly rescued. It was a bit confusing where it happened because the initial report was B14, then B12, they were pulling people out the water outside B-10. The Coast Gaurd righted the boat and towed it in. It looked to be about a 20 foot aluminum sled. Cannot be to careful out there.

At 3 pm somebody turned the fish on because it seemed like every body was netting fish. Between 3 and 5 in the afternoon the bite was on. I had to see 100 +/- fish netted. After missing the first 2 in the morning I tossed the file and put a wetstone to the hook for an extremely sharp hook. I had 3 more hits between 3 and 5 with no damage to the herring ?????????. It was definetly fish, could they have hit my flasher?? Any way at 6 I was tired and went home like most everybody else.

While at the boat ramp the fish count guy said he had only counted 14 fish in 27 boats with 3 of the fish being in the boat in front of me. I saw a lot better results on the water than the fish count guy was talking about.

Having never fished bouy 10 before, I can only say I will put a little vaseline down the sides of the boat next time so the other boats will slide by better. I do not enjoy fishing in this tight of quarters. At 3 when the bite started the water was at full run, about a 20 mph wind , and about 5 feet between boats. Not what I call enjoyable fishing. Most of the fish I saw caught were within a stone throw (or two) of B-10. It was an experience.

Oh yeah sounds like you got broke in right. I know its hard to troll where you want and also hard to go your own speed but that is the trick. The fish are everywhere from buoy 10 on up to 22 on the flood tide. Find some water where birds (especially Pelicans) are feeding and troll with the current at about ten feet with a loose drag. When you get to the end of it wind em up and run back to the top for another go. We go fast, fast, fast and when we get bit we speed up to get the slack out of the line. Once the fisher has a good bend on the rod then slow down and play. Spent many frustrating bait checks figuring that one out. If you stop or slow down the silver will jump until your barbless hooks fly off. Are you leaving one hook loose near the tail of your bait? That can hook up any sambo that tries to snap at the tail of your herring. Letting the line go out after a missed strike and pausing it every few seconds also works. We will be down Sunday but on out to CR and buoy 2. Salmon eat breakfast and I'm serving it up with some iron supplement tomorrow at daylight. We might try buoy 10 on the flood tide if we aren't done by noon. Any way I'll report in when we're quits for the day....Later.

My little brother called me today after he fished the Columbia. He told me the bar was closed in the morning and they couldn't get to where they wanted so they fished towards Astoria somewhere ????. On the water at 7 am and they hooked 13 chinook on the outgoing tide and boated 5 of them. Back in Tillamook by 3pm. I couldn't get the location with any amount of pleading, aren't brother great. Especially when I smell of skunk from the previous day.

I fished the last couple hours of incoming this afternoon near 10 and never saw a net move, saw a few fish under one batch of birds very briefly, but it was a smooth, no wind ride for a change!!

Eggs, fishin' 10 is kinda like fishin' Trask tidewater in Oct., except the bouncing around at 10 could use that vaseline trick of yours (and bumpers). I should mention that fishing Bouy 10 not only has many more fish but is very much safer on the incoming tide. That bar is one of the worst in the world, particularly on an outgoing tide and when it's windy. A lot of the chop out there is so many boats running around. No prob during the peak fishing hours though, because if you ever fall out of your boat you'll just land in another one. Good luck. - Steve
