Re: Leader Tie Instructions Website
Thanks. Now a question, I don't think from your instructions the front hook will be a sliding snell. Is it? I don't even know if it should be, but most of the premade leaders I bought were sliding snells on the front hook. I've looked several times for instructions on a sliding snell and haven't been able to find any instructions for it.
I'll use your illustrations and instructions to tie some leaders with barbless hooks. Thanks.

Re: Leader Tie Instructions Website
Ron M- The front hook is not a sliding hook.
I can't answer for Tomictime (or can I?????), but I and many others prefer fixed hooks much more than sliders.
Over the years I have caught my share of fish with the 2nd hook broken off. I prefer the security of knowing that if the back hook should break off, the front hook isn't going to slide off the leader.
Now some will say that the back hook is more likely to break with a fixed leader since the two hooks can pull against each other, possibly leading to leader failure. While this certainly could be true, I have a hard time recalling a lost fish due to a broken leader at the hooks.
The other general idea that people like sliders for is that you can "tune" your herring roll easier, and a single sliding leader works for various sizes of herring.
My feeling on this is that it takes so little time to tie a leader on the spot specific to what your bait and desire is, there isn't much of a reason for a slider.
The new "boa" sliders seem to latch on pretty tight, and combined with the Owner hooks are pretty slick. Of course if you do a search, you can find out how those are tied as well. It's no secret.
What do you think Jim?

Ron M
A good way to tie the sliding hook, and I have never had a problem with the set up, is to thread the leader through the eye of the hook, then tie over it a roe knot using waxed dental floss. Leave a little tag end on each end to retighten later if needed. If you use enough wraps, it is difficult to slide the hook. I haven't tried the bubblegum, or mint flavor yet, but have used only the unflavored kind of floss.

Re: Leader Tie Instructions Website
To make the lead hook slide just run the leader up through the eye. I use a smaller # leader. Cut off a couple feet and tir the second hook just like the bottom. Pretend the other leader isn't even there.

Re: Leader Tie Instructions Website
..Yup, what nalu said. Thanks for helping me out. I have never lost a fish to broken hook..well maybe one...I also agree with custom space if you are using bait. But I still pre-tie as much as I can..time with gear in water = more fish. I have probably 12 leader totes full of diff stuff, including some dual hook ties for plugs, custome lengths for baitbusters, diff size Hootchies, etc..

Re: Leader Tie Instructions Website
Jim-
Agreed. I have a leader tackle box pre-tied with hootchie and krystal flash combinations that I simply connect to the salmon rods. I have multiple setups of my favorite color combinations. I also tie all my hooks the same distance apart as I feel comfortable that I can get the proper roll/action out of my pre-tied rigs.
I don't like to fiddle with gear on the water. Get it out and let it fish.
