Default How about ODFW "how to classes" for guys??

I read about all these pretty cool ODFW classes for women being taught throughout the state but has anyone given the thought of having them for men also.

I know there are alot of us who have never hunted or fished for certain species and would like to give it a try but don't know how or don't have the time to adjust to the learning curve.

I think the ODFW is missing a great oportunity to reach out to the male hunting community by not offering classes such as those offered at BOW seminars.

What do you happy hunters think???

My wife has attended several of the BOW (Becoming an Outdoor Woman) sessions and they've been great! Of course after she came home from the Steens Mt trail ride I had to buy her a horse ( ) but I can't totally blame them for that.

I've looked at some of their agendas wishing I could participate in something like that. Salmo, I think it's a great idea.

PS. I thought they were going to do something like that on predator hunting, but haven't heard much in the last six or eight months. Don Becker had some info on that.

Yeah,

I'd like to learn how to razor clam and hunt waterfowl. Predator calling would be cool too, maybe learn how to call in lions and bears to boot.

How about learning to fly fish. How many people are going to dump a ton of cash to get into fly fishing without at least trying it out.

If there is enough interest here I'll take the initiative and see how many heads I can clank at ODFW to see what it would take to start a program for guys.

Isn't that why we have ifish? I (re)started hunting and fishing last year. So far, ifishers have taught me duck hunting on Sauvie's and Boardman, Kokanee fishing, and some bass and trout techniques. As soon as we can, I expect to extend that to salmon and steelhead.

I have an extra flyrod. I'm a rookie at it, but I'll show you the basics if you want to some time.

My understanding is that ODFW plans on evolving the BOW program to be more inclusive and include all genders. From what I have heard your concerns and comments have been made before and staff realized that all persons needed or showed interest in these informative sessions.

Hope that helps

'Last I heard, the idea was still alive and well. Did you ever get contacted, Jim?

I agree a program for men (and, especially boys) would be a great idea. Gee, maybe it would mean more interest and more licenses/tags/$ for ODFW . . . . . Don

You want to go dig a clam, just send me a PM!

I agree, they should expand this program, but in order to do that they will need volunteers, this is where we can help. I'm game!

I would certainly be interested in classes in fishing and hunting. I'm a mostly self-taught waterfowler and deer hunter and there is so much else I'd like to learn, but haven't had the opportunity to. My third son is about to be born and I've got to learn all this stuff to be able to teach them. I'm behind already!

Anybody able to teach turkey hunting on Mondays or Tuesdays? I have all the gear.

Actually, the department HAS to allow everyone to participate in the BOW program and cannot limit it to women. They often have husbands and other males sign up for the program's classes...Still need to make it seem more inclusive, though...

I think this kind of thing is great. I would ask all Ifishers a question here - How many friends, kids, relatives or whoever can we help-out by introducing them to outdoor activities. We can not wait or rely only on ODFW's classes to help out.
Don't get me wrong here, I just think everyone that hunts, fishes, or just enjoy's the outdoors, should make it a point to try and get as many people involved as we can.
Just a thought: Thank's.

Spot on Spud....I fully agree, and I feel that everyday I do my part, whether it be taking a newbie out for an adventure...or discussing the positives of the outdoors with folks I run into. One person at a time!!!

Sorry I have to be the loudmouth girl in the room.

There are some youth hunts comming up throughout oregon this is a good way to get your kids involved and you can learn more information about particular hunting/ fishing skill. Also there are a bunch of OHA and DU shoots comming up which is a great way to learn about shotgunning.

For the youth hunts I am having a hard time getting a hold of anyone to get my son signed up for classes, I tried last year also. No returned phone calls or emails
