Default B-10

Can't believe that we have had 2 days of fishing and no feed back (Posts) on 10.
What is happening at B-10. Good or bad.

Seems to be a big secret. All I have heard is that there are alot of coho in the river.

I've been reading some of the posts off and on for sometime but never registered (guilt), so thought it was time to come forward. I did not fish buoy 10 as of yet, but I have heard of some fish being caught. It sounds as that you have to put in your time. Today for example, there was a good bite at the top of high water that lasted for aprox. 45 min. right at 10. The guys that I talked to said that they had many hits but couldn't get the hooks to stay in, they didn't limit out but they did have some fish to show for their efforts. They did say that they saw other boats hooked up as well at that time (high water). I know this post is "hear say" but for the record I do live here in Warrenton (buoy 10 country) and I fish every chance I can. Oh by the way one of the local charter boats today in the ocean landed a 40 lb. chinook ( way to go Capt. Mark). So things should start happening soon, I hope this helps fisherpeople.

Well I was hoping for a good Buoy 10 report too, but doesn't sound like folks have really started to fish down there. I read the Vancouver paper this morning and as of tuesday folks are averaging about 1/2 fish per angler. Just about the whole catch was silvers though.

Talked to the ODFW biologist in Astoria on 8/2. He said that the are getting about 1/2 a fish per rod and they are 99% silvers. They are getting them right at the B-10 line at the top of high water. He also said the NW wind has been blowing pretty hard and has made things less than ideal. He also mentioned that the river is pretty warm, and a good rain could make things pick up pretty quick.

Expect more fish this weekend as well as more people.

ABL,

If you get over early enough drive over the bridge and launch at Chinook. Start fishing when you exit the shallow water in 20 to 35 feet of water. The fish may not be there in numbers yet but with a early evening high tide there should be something around. Should be worth a shot unless you want to try sturgeon and save Salmon for Sunday then I'd fish off Tongue Point and put in at John day boat ramp east of Astoria.

tight lines,

There was a gillnet fishery last night(Aug. 3) in the lower Columbia, it lasted from 7 pm till 7 am (12 hr opener). There was not that many gillneter's that were out, but the ones that were caught fish. The netter's that were there had 4-5000 lbs. half Sturg. and half Salmon. There were a couple of 40-50lb Salmon in their net as well. So the fish are there, but I'm sure this will slow the bite down for Fri. & Sat. some ( I'm hope I'm wrong). I will be out there on Sun. Also the river is full of chovies. Good Luck Fisherpeople!

Ok, it's time I quit reading and not posting. We're bound for the mighty Columbia next week to try for chinook over there for the first time. We've fished B.C. for many years, Alaska too, but we're intimidated by the Columbia estuary. I think we'll skulk around below the bridge. Would this be a good play for us first-timers? Should we maybe hire a guide (where the hell is Herbie Good?) once out to Buoy 10? Where should we park an rv, and should we try to get reservations? Is it too LATE for reservations? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Katchun. Welcome to Ifish! Hey, when those big Dworshak/Clearwater B's are stacked below Orfino let us know. If you have a seat open in your boat for that send me an e-mail! -- Don't be intimidated about Bouy 10 fishing near the Col. R. bar. If you get thrown out of your boat you'll just land in someone else's boat and never get wet . That's how many boats will be out there. I like to cram in with the crowds right up at the bouy line during low tide and be ready for the giant wave of biting fish to sweep in on the incoming tide. You can catch them all the way up river of Bouy 22, where the boats are spread out, and even on up toward the Astoria Bridge on a strong high tide. There will be plenty of fish to go around during the peak of a coho run expected to approach half a million fish!! The 'Nook quota is 9000 for bouy 10, then the 'ho's only. Come on over. Later. - RT

Katchun Release,
If you're new to the buoy 10 fishery, and don't want to jam in with the horde of boats around buoy 10, I'd suggest trying along the Washington shore around Chinook. Good fishing and the boats are more spread out (hence a less stressful experience).
Fish the incoming tide. Most guys use big divers with a herring or anchovy bait.

Watch your depth finder. There are lots of shoal areas outside the channels. I'd strongly suggest you get a chart of the lower Columbia if you're not familar with that area (check out: http://www.maptech.com/).

And watch out for the big commercial shipping traffic; stay far away from the ships and barges that will be passing through the fishing fleet.

Good luck....MikeT

Katchun,

I'm with MikeT here. There's really no reason to crowd in at the buoy line if you're not confortable with fishing at such close quarters. For the past few years, my buddy and I have limited pretty easily without ever joining the crowds. The area just outside Chinook harbor and down to Ilwaco harbor have been good to us. Just watch for the tide rip, and the fish will push in on the incoming tide. You won't have the water to yourself, by any sense of the imagination, but you'll have more room to play fish and troll if you stay out of the hordes at the buoy line.

We've done well just using either a diver and cut-plug herring (I use fresh ones, but you must reserve some before you get there) or a lead ball on a sinker-slide with a dropper and a herring when targeting the Nooks. There's supposed to be large numbers of fish, so you might score with flasher/hoochies, or just trolling spoons or plugs. Look for troughs on your depth finder, as the fish often travel up these.

Please post your results for us, if you don't mind. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Holy cats, I've spent the last two hours trying to find an RV space in Astoria. Sounds like a freakin' ZOO over there! I can't get a soul at the Hammond Marina. Is there any other moorage? Is this going to be a gunwale to gunwale combat fishing nightmare or is there a little quiet space somewhere out there (this side of Japan, hopefully)? We're not much in to combat fishing no matter how great the perceived reward.... Any feedback?

Call Tackle Time and see how the parking is in Warrenton. Might be better, and they will give you the heads up on what is up. Reserve bait while you are on the phone or you won't have any! It gets real unavailable really fast!

Or call marie at Tillamook Bait and see how they are doing over in Chinook for R.V. spaces. She has bait too.

I fished the ocean today, and came up with a couple of silvers. I had to move a bit before getting on top of them. I know that was a pretty boring report but I'm saving the best fo last. So, are you ready! While I was out in the ocean, Salmon Master Guide Service was in the river and he was "taking care of business". Dennis boated a 30,28,22,and 47 yes a "fourty seven" pound up river bright and released 2 tuleys and one jack. It just doesn't get much better than that. " Way to go Dennis"

Hey! I just talked to RKB on the cell phone. B-10 stinks today. Only 4 fish checked at Ilwaco by noon! Water is warm, 70 degrees. They quit at noon. Man, I hope the Ocean is better tomorrow. The bend is your friend!

Shoulda oughta been on the Awsome Osprey ... we saw a few on the incoming at B10 but saw more up past the church and around the bridge. Seems like all the action was on the outgoing which we fished until about 3. We missed one massive takedown which was on for about 10 seconds and kept a nice fat silver and the roundest king I've ever seen.

Fished the ocean today, it was great. We were down 8 nm 180 deg. from the south tip of the jetty. All the fish were nice size ho's even a nice nook. It's to bad that the ocean is closed as of midnight tonight (Sun.) Fished four rods, and at one time we even had a tripple. The eggs that were in the fish were only 1/4 mature. I hope the mighty Columbia picks up soon. Friday (two rods) we got two take downs and got both nooks (twin 22 lb) on the out going tide. On Sat. fished the outgoing again (three rods) and released five tuleys with no brights. The NW afternoon wind was also fun both days. If I hear of something else that takes off this week I'll post it. You noticed I said hear, I have to do that work thing.

Fished all over, all day Sat. Decent silver bite at b10 on the outgoing tide, we caught one big silver and lost a couple. Caught 1 chinook and lost 2 others between 4:00-5:00 late in the outgoing tide, off the church. That fish was full of little bait fish, he must have coughed up 30 of them on my deck. We were almost by ourself when that little flurry came. Seemed like a slow day overall.

Hey Reelin, I don't know very much about the tuleys as far as where they came from. I don't want to guess and tell you the wrong thing. Maybe someone else out there can answer your question. All I know is that the meat is not as firm as the brights, and most of the time it's not as red. I like to fish and if I'm going to bring a fish home to eat, I like the bright's better.

It wasn't red hot by any means, but there were some fish caught today (Mon.) at buoy 10 on the incoming tide. So maybe things might be looking up (I hope). All I know is that it wasn't that good over the weekend in the river. Good tides this week! When it breaks loose with fish, you better be here.

TULEY is a lower river chinook, they spend some time in lower river because they don't have far to go. Have caught tuleys at westport so dark that milt runs out of them when trying to release them.

I'm in agreement with bathtub Bob. I always heard tules were lower columbia river fish. That would explain why they are darker and appear closer to spawning since they don't have so far to travel.

BobberDown,

Hi bobber, Can you give me some information about the tules. I know what they look like, a little darker coloring. I caught one two years ago and kept it. It thought it tasted the same as the brights. Is that run endangered? Can you tell why you don't keep them?

Thanks

Hey Slutgoddess,
Change that hooch set up (I think he showed you how I tie up hooches) to a tube fly and use the anise extract bait (did RT tell ya about that???) and you'll slay some silvers.

Yesturday (Tue.) my son went fishing B-10 with his good friend Dennis S.M.G.S. and they had a very good day. Five people in the boat, and they finished with five chinook and five coho. There seemed to be a good bite all through the day. I'll keep you posted throughout the week if you like.

From what I heard many years ago, that Tule's are a totally non native experiment from the 70's. I think that there is a Tule River, BC. They were planted in places like the main stem Santiam as a trade off with the Canadians for taking their fish. The Tules turn into garbage before they even hit fresh water but they are a good fish when they are in Canadian waters. I can remember fishing for them when I was a kid in the Santiam. As far as numbers back to the river I think that they were considered a success, there were thousands of them and they were huge and black. There is still a remnant run
that spawns in the main stem and up a couple of miles into the S. Santiam. I also remember the biologist hated them because they are not native to the ecosystem. When will the bureaucrats start listening to the people that really know what’s going on? Biologists have been complaining about this for over 50 years now. Sorry, got of off the subject.

Bobber down,
Do you have any information on where at Buoy 10 they were fishing(Buoy 10 line, church hole, 101 bridge, etc.) and what they were using? (Plug-cut vs. whole, herring vs. anchovies, dodgers, etc.?) Any tips would be appreciated since we are going down Friday. Thanks.

Yesturday (Tue.) my son went fishing B-10 with his good friend Dennis S.M.G.S. and they had a very good day. Five people in the boat, and they finished with five Chinook and five coho. There seemed to be a bite all thru the day. I'll keep you posted throughout the week if you like.
