Default Smallies on a fly

Has anyone fished for smallmouth on a fly? I have a couple of good friends here I want to fish for smallmouth more with this year. I also love flyfishing. I want to flyfish for Smallies while they fish traditionally. I have sinking lines, etc. Any tips so that when I get together with my good buddy, who shall remain nameless (Bert) I can try to outfish him with a fly?

May- September fish the backwaters of the Columbia between portland and Umatillia ( some spots the columbia itself) During low light conditions fish top water, I prefer deer hair poppers yellow seems to be a good color. during bright sunnt times fish subsurface. I like clouser minnows chartuce and white works for me and wolley buggers black, brown, white..
cast along the rip rap either from a boat or from shore.. If there are lits of fish biting fish perpedicular to the bank.. if few fish are biting fish parallel and cover lots of water...
hope this helps

I second the woolie buggers. My biggest smallmouth to date came on a woolie bugger. With clear intermediate line.

Any fly with yellow on it seams to be the ticket here. I caught about 150 on the john day last summer on yellow

You can soar-mouth every fish in the John Day with a green bugger. Drop it off a popper, they'll hit both. You don't need sinking line.

Haven't tried the pond along the Columbia.

I've had the funnest fishing of my life with poppers at Oxbow and the John Day, nothing like a smallmouth hitting a topwater

Sure there're SM at Chinook Landing. The bank just west of the opening is good. But a lot of current there for flies.

What are your guy's favorite SM fly patterns & sizes?
I've heard Wooley Buggers, poppers how about hopper patterns?
