Oregonian Today....1,000,000 more people in 20 yrs
Everyone read this article? Californian's are a'comin......
Hope we can keep a stable power supply for all those people....
Seems that it's retired folks, cashing out and buying big up here, and younger families, unfortunately often not a good combination when it comes to such things as tax receipts, levies, and school bonds.
We've got to address:
1. the transportation issue. Our roads are overcrowded enough already, yet the ones in power insist on NOT building more....
2. the education issue. We MUST have stable funding, and it's high time to start charging developers and their developments significant fees for their total impact, not just on water and sewer.
3. the healthcare issue. Many of these folks will be in their retirement years, this will require more healthcare.
Hope our planners realize all of this. The problem with most governments is that seriously looking beyond the current fiscal year is extraordinarily difficult, especially in Oregon. We used to be a state well prepared for the future, now we've done just the opposite.
Who know what will happen with the upholding of M37?

with the state's tax structure, it's really surprising to have people on fixed incomes moving here. most of them go to non-income tax states like washington, nevada or florida. just goes to show, you can fool some of the people all of the time....

They're moving here because of the climate, people (or lack of) and the beauty. But, with a million more people, how do we keep it that way?

I don't think it is the climate, it is the price of Real Estate in California. My Cuz who lives in Ojai paid $250,000 for a place no bigger than my 2 bedroom apartment.

Have ya looked at the cost of "townhouses" or common wall type places recently?
Should be interesting. They better stay off my river.

WaterDog, yes I have. In 1986, bought a house for 46 grand....sold it to a Californian who had cash for 110 grand. Most of the money went to my old attorney...

Re: Oregonian Today....1,000,000 more people in 20 yrs
As long as they can launch/retrieve a boat within a minute and don't crowd my boat during the URB run, I guess I can live with it
In all reality though, what can you do to stop it? How many Oregonians will die or relocate before then? I really don't think the population increase will be that high. I guess we can all have anxiety attacks waiting to see if it will come true or if Social Security will be dried up or a barage of other unpleasant things but I guess I'll just stick to the things I have control over.

Chris, I'm pretty sure you can count on a whole lot more folks around here. Mac has over 30K now. Just means we'll have to get up earlier, sleep on the boat or drive further to get away. It's all good and for me it's job security.

Re: Oregonian Today....1,000,000 more people in 20
We lost western Oregon circa 1965, although my parents and grandparents would say much earlier.
Now we are increasingly becoming the "thing" people left; and each new wave, builds upon the changes made by the previous waves.
For some these changes are wonderful, and Progressive ; for me, I miss the Oregon I knew 45-50 years ago. If Montana or Wyoming had saltwater, I'd be outta here.

Re: Oregonian Today....1,000,000 more people in 20
I am old enough to remember when Oregon was a nice place to live, I spent my childhood learning to fish around Paisley in the many creeks that are so Californiaized with regulations that I can't bring myself even to go there anymore. My family came here on the Oregon Trail and settled throughout the state. I remember the signs as you were coming into Oregon and the gruff that was raised by the outsiders and it had to be changed. Read "Welcome to Oregon, We hope you enjoy your VISIT! Now all I can think about is getting out of Dodge yet again to someplace that has not been Californicated. Asia is looking REAL nice too me

When they come, they had better not moan about our taxes! We didn't ask them to come. They came on their own choosing- thus they must appreciate our tax structure, school funding situation, high income and property taxes.
Sigh- or maybe they are coming to assimilate us *shudder*

Think it is a little to late on that.
I feel at least we can thank them for the high taxes we are paying now when the "early" settlers came up to escape California's $#!% "OPPS!" and changed this place to more reflect what they just escaped from
Remember , Oregonian please don't Californicate! musta not sunk in I guess
