Default Non-finclipped jack salmon

Last October I was fishing for coho in the N.F. Nehalem tide water, The three of us caught 2 hatchery coho and one native and released it. However I landed one non-finclipped jack salmon and read my 1999 regs and everything I read I thought it was a legal fish to keep.

We pulled the boat out and the fish and game guy asked if we had any luck,Said it was a good day. Asked to see the fish and said OK.

WELL I was flabergasted when said I caught an illegal and wrote me up. He pointed it out in the regs under the trout heading that,You can keep anything under 20" Except
non-finclipped jack Coho salmon. Under the trout heading. I was fishing for salmon.

Make a long story short I tried to fight it in court and lost, however the judge pointed out that I could take my questions to the quaterly meeting held by the fish & wildlife guys.

My Question to all you guys is, "do jack salmon contibute to the future salmon runs"
it is my understanding that jack salmon are not mature to produce a new generation of fish.

I will go to the meeting and ask the question Why are the jack salmon so important to keep.

I'm not a lawyer or a politiction, but just a regular guy who loves to fish and be outdoors.

Peace Sandybar

Jacks are sexually mature male salmon that return a year or two early (depending upon the species). They are considered precarious males and yes they can spawn with ripe hens. Obviously this is an evolutionary advantage that is often overlooked or ignored by management schemes.

while your at it ask them who's idea it is to make the regulations impossiable to understand. And if they realy want to manage fish they should check with how other states do it. The way they manage and change things is a sign that ODFW is totaly incompetent. I have seen how states do it out east and they NEVER change the rules once the book is printed and when they do change the regulations from year to year it has always been a benifit to the sport fishing.
I understand and agree they need rules but reading the regulation book here is a joke, it seems to change over night and is never in favor of the sport fishing. If ODFW wont stick up for us who will?

sorry if this affends anyone just my opinion on how miss managed sport fishing is.We need someone to help protect the sport fishing and improve it. which I dont see happening.

cts, I agree with you about the regs, you need a lawyer to decipher it for you. Often wonder if they do it to get more money out of us.

Howdy,
It sounds like the reg.s in Or. are the same lawyerspeak we have to wade through in Wa. Heres a plan, freshwater(river, lake, beaver pond) areas open year-round C&R only. All catch and take fisheries to be opened as real data shows a harvestable portion available. Closed waters are a benefit to poachers, catch and release fishermen would provide a presence the woefully understaffed or plain neglectful enforcement that isn't eliminating the good ol boy attitudes.

My opinion is that the Oregon regulations are much easier to read and understand than the Washington regs. Glad I don't live there.

When the arresting officer called me in January, 4 months after the illegal jack was caught, he said the fine was for educating the public!!

Maybe we need to have the ODFW educate us at there cost! Not ours.
