Default King search (Newport)

I have started my search for chinooks out of Newport, yesterday was a bust. Went to the pile and had the bumpiest ride yet this year. I will not say just how many silvers I hooked but it was alot. I couldn't get away from them, I used big whole herring 200 ft deep and couldn't keep it down 10 minutes. Even used some big plug that you would never think they could get in their mouth, but they did.
When I got back I found the bay full of perfect bait size herring, now I can jig fresh bait and hit the big low tides around the jaws and off the reefs.

Gee that's tough when you can't keep those fat healthy silver salmon off your hooks along enough to get to the 'Nooks Wak. I get the same feeling when I can't keep the mudcats off when I'm backbouncing for them. - If I sound a little envious that you have such good fishing so close to home, you're right. In about 15 years we have to decide whether to retire at the coast where I prefer or Central Oregon near Sisters/Bend where my wife prefers. I like it there too. Tough choices. BTW, I forget where the "Pile" is. Can you describe where, unless your buddies would mind and we'd understand. Tight lines. - RT

RT,
Wow ! My wife wants to retire in Central Oregon (Bend/Sunriver) too. And I would like to retire at the coast. She says it's always rainy and gray at the coast, and I say salmon and steelhead fishing is lousy in Bend. What are we going to do?

RT. The rock pile is about 15 miles out, if you run 240 degrees you cant miss it. It is about 6 miles long and 1 and a half wide. My nephews came to visit and wanted a boat ride, so we went out and when I saw how nice the ocean was, off we went to the pile again. I did catch one chinook about 10 pounds and they had fun catching silvers. Again they are thick and I really try not to hook them. I have only hooked one bad the rest were lip hooked. If these are Columbia fish they are nice size. I did have one earlier with a tag in the nose and when I get the results I'll let you know.
