Default Cancun In April

The wife and I are heading to Cancun in April and I would really like to try my hand at some Bone Fishing. All of the information I have found online is for some very expensive guides.

Any recommendations on affordable guide services for a half day would be greatly appreciated.

I really like working with Yellow Dog out of Montana. Great guys and they can get you a 1/2 or full day at the right price. Ask for Jim Klug and tell him Scott Plemmons sent ya. (Mod note: link to non ifish sponsors not allowed. Thanks, Giz..)

I go to cancun once a year and fish...

Whats the main purpose of your trip? If you want bones you have to drive quite a ways south...the best fishing I have done is right off the beaches. 2 years ago there were schools of kingfish chasing baitfish not 30 yards from our condo.

The lagoon side of the island is a blast to fish, barracudas are everywhere and if you time it right the baby tarpon will be readily avaliable.

I have not found a fly fishing only guide in cancun, but alot of the local guides will take you out on their boat for less than a hundred bucks and let you try your hand at catching some fish...dont expect any flyfishing advice from these guys.

There is an overabundance of barracuda on both sides of the peninsula, bring wire leaders and huge clousers and STRIP FAST! Last year my uncle landed a 5 footer, it was impressive...2 casts later we had a stingray on the dock...HINT NIGHT FISHING IS FFFUUUUUNNNN! 10 coronas and fish all night!

The trip is pretty casual with a lot of site seeing and lounging to be had.

Not intended to be a fishing trip. Just thought if I can get out it might be fun.

mpruet,

I was south of Cancun in December and had my first chance to fish for bonefish and had a blast! We were staying about an hour and a half south of Cancun in a town called Akumal (sp?). A buddy of mine and I drove further south about a half-hour to the Boca Pailla fishing resort. The fishing down there is for average-sized bones, but really known (apparently) for it's permit fishing.

Thought my friend and I had never fished for bones before we both hooked up and landed our first bonefish. The Boca Pailla fishing resort is NOT cheap. I think we spent about $450us for a half day.

If you are interested in something a little closer to Cancun. I recommend Cozumal. You'll have to drive south to Playa del Carmen (which is awesome by the way and your wife would love it) and take the ferry over. Playa del Carmen is only about 45 minutes to an hour south of Cancun. The ferry to Cozymal is about a 1/2 hour and costs like $15. I went out with a local guide named Alex.

His boat was not as nice as the one at Boca Pailla, but was just fine. Besides, we mostly waded once we got onto the flats. Alex is awesome and proved to be a much better guide at $250 for a half day than the $400+ I paid at Boca Pailla. His english is also very good.

GO BONEFISHING. I have only been out the two times I am writing about, but man this will stick in your dreams. Google flyfishing cozymal to find Alex. I would refer him to anyone. Make sure you post some photos when you get back.

I'm wondering if the bonefishing hasn't been effected by the hurricane that hit Cancun and Cozumel dead on....hopefully they have had amble time to recover, but these kind of event can change to shallow underwater geography. I second the barracuda trip...we went right out of Cancun for a 1/2 on a boat for like $80 and caught tons!!! Big red stringy things would kill them....maybe a huge red articulated leech.
