So what should I do with the rest of my life???
Hi all
Some of you know that I retired to take care of our newborn...she is now almost a year old...time flys.
I have finished up a 800 sq ft adition on my house and plan on spending the next couple years fishing and traveling with my wife.
I have been trying to decide what to do in the future....in 5 or so years the lil one will start school and I may want to "do" something else (maybe not)
I was considering going back for my Masters but you know with mid life crisis fast aproaching I am considering a different direction. (I am tired of being used and spit out by the corp. world)
I have a degree in Biz. and am a high time pilot (comercial)
I did purchasing for a while but I think I may like to get into the sporting field or maybe get my teaching certifacate....
Anyway anyone have any input of what I may want to look into??
I don't "need" to work but kinda get bored when the baby's not running me ragged
I was offered a job with the Washington State Patrol and Island Air flying but just don't want to do that I like being at home with my wife and daughter. (and now it is my job to raise the daughter for the next few years)
Any input would be great
I enjoy the outdoors, flying,I am a steller negotiator
If anyone knows of a small biz for sale that needs some attention let me know.
Thanks all
Paul

If I were to win the lottery, I would become a teacher. It is an admirable profession. Pays terrible, but the contribution to society is great. I'm thinking life would be good as a teacher, if you didn't need the money.
Best of luck with your plans.

Hmmmm....
Tough negotiator, independant business, commercial pilot...
Have you considered short hops to certain South American Countries?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
Best wishes on your search.

You could be a CFI. Work when you want and use it as an excuse to make all kinds of business deductions.

Negotiate world peace...
Try volunteering at a hatchery or watershed improvement council. They dont pay much, but it seems like something you could enjoy.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
How about flying spotter plane in the summer for the Salty dogs and tell us where the tuna are? We are always looking for debri fields, slicks, temperature breaks, bait fish, birds etc.... at 30 to 50 miles offshore, and looking is slow in a boat
I know there are a few planes that do this type of work for the herring and anchovie fishermen.

BOE took the words right out of my mouth.
But y'know... we have a charitable non-profit that's looking for a couple of executive officers. It would be volunteer but your time is tax-deductible.
If you're interested in helping this fledgling corporation find it's wings (or fins ) we sure could use some help...
Check it out at www.OceanEd.org
PM me if interested in knowing more...

How about a mediator? Most of them are attorneys, but I have no idea what qualifications are needed to be an accredited mediator...
You can choose when and what you mediate...therefore deciding the time spent with family.

I dream of selling nails at Home Depot or buying a Papa Murphy's, but then again, I have low aspirations...just want alot of time off to fish, hunt and golf

Tackle and electronics sales, from home. Mail order stuff? Good write offs, and discounts for your fishing addiction!!!

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
I have the same problem. I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up and still don't. I wish I could get hold of something to get passionate about. Something to get excited about, Something to make a difference, somewhere to someone or something.
Starting to not make sense.
Good luck on the rest of your life.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
If I were in your position, I would seek a low end job at a small airport and try to work into the airport management business. It's a tough feild to get into unless your lucky and land a job right out of college or are willing to start at the ground floor. Once you have a foot in the door though, there are a lot of opportunities to get AAAE certified. I would LOVE to have that career path and eventually be able to manage a small airport in a community like Tillamook, Newport, Coos Bay, Port Angeles etc etc.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
If I was a high-time commercial pilot with no need to work, this is what I would do. Mission Aviation Fellowship. But I don't know your religous persuasion, and 3rd world countries may not be the best place to raise a child.
Just thought I would mention it as it's a dream of mine sometime in my future. However i'm just a student with 23.0 hrs, so it's a long ways away for me.
Another option, get your A&P. (Airframe & Powerplant, for the un-initiated. Basically and airplace mechanic.) Nothing like being able to work on your own airplane to get away from those exorbitant costs. Assuming you have an airplane, if not, that's another option. Alot of cool places to visit all over the country.
And to the Salty Dogs, do you guys ever stop thinking about TUNA!? (Don't bother, I know the answer, I suffer from the same affliction ) We'll see what we can get together this summer, I hope to have my Pilot's License by June 1, but many things could affect that date... I'll keep ya'll updated on the other board. I would definitely be down for making a couple flights for the "cause".

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
Any nearby locations to be a ground school instructor for commercial or private? Should have you away less than flying. My father is a ground school instructor for the airline with the initials A.A. and loves it but they are centralized in DFW because of headquarters there. Perhaps there's something more local on a smaller scale between Portland/Seattle?

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
What sort of legacy do you want to create? Perhaps a little better world for your kids?
How about contributing your expertise by volunteering with a nonprofit or charity that does something you care about. (Fishing orgs always need help)Once you know the ropes, good board members are in short supply and especially appreciated.
There's a lot of satisfaction to be gained from helping build organizations and advancing their mission. If you don't need a big monument, it's one way of building a lasting legacy - (and more socially acceptable than being an infamous criminal )

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
what do you really love to do? what would you do even if you did not get paid to do it? is there something that you've always said, "boy if i ever have time i'm going to...." (for me, it's guitar lessons, but james taylor needn't worry, there's no way i could make it a profession). i'd spend some time exploring the answers to these and other similar questions and the "correct" answer will eventually present itself.

I second garyk's comment, and could not have said it any better! You are a lucky man. A young one to nurture, and money in the bank with no worries. This should be THE luckiest kid alive. Her dad will not miss school plays, ball games, science fairs. Help out in her classroom. Coach a few of her sports teams. And keep your eye out to help those kids that aren't lucky enough to have you for a dad. Man, could life be any better! Good on ya!

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life???
I just spent the last 15 minutes crafting a reply to this thread and decided to erase it.
I couldn't find the words to express my thoughts with out sounding bitter or jellous.
Bottom line.....you are a lucky man.....one in a million. I hope you realize that. Spend time with your daughter, fish, fly, travel........But I can't even begin to relate, or give advice. I'm too busy surviving.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
Papa hog...I feel the same way. I am 56 years old and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. I've always been envious of the right and left wing extremists, they have a passion that commands their lives. I feel I got the "boring" gene. I do something for awhile and get bored. I wish I was passionate about something other than fishing. But then, that's OK too.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
It's a tough subject!
I'm 51 and in a transition period. Lost love, new job, a kid turning 18 soon, new dog, old horse, other things, and Spring on it's way. Normal everyday life with a little fun thrown in once in awhile is good for me. Don't feel bad AOR. Life doesn't always have to be in the fast lane and the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence.....if you take good care of your own lawn!

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
volunteer at a hospital....or a senior center....or a meals on wheels. you have a daughter you`ll be raising for the next few years?? come back again with the question when your ready. why even bother now? in a couple years won`t matter what is said now. ya know it`s almost like your rubbing your good fortune in alls faces here, most will never have your opprtunity to be a stay at home mom or dad let alone retire altogether. good for you though, enjoy the retirement.

Re: So what should I do with the rest of my life??
Don't take this wrong at all but there are so many organizations that need volunteers there should never be an excuse for being bored. I congradulate you on being able to be your kids dad and for your success.
