RD - I haven't fished the Nehalem Bay fishery much in comparison to T-Bay, but enough to help you get started. Fishing strategy there is somewhat similar to T-Bay. Early in the season (now) troll between the jetties on the incoming tide. Use large cutplug herring on long 7' leaders with 2' lead droppers. If the current is strong sometimes you need to backtroll and tap the herring rig on bottom. In slower currents you can troll in both directions. Watch the guide's patterns. The upper half of incoming and thru high tide is best. Then on up the bay near Wheeler troll the herring rig and also try spinners and Kwikfish. Then on up to upper tidewater in a few weeks it's bobber and eggs/shrimp. Also casting spinners. Good luck. - RT

RT
You say to use a 2 foot lead dropper. Why?? There must be an advantage. I see on other recent post the recommendation was to troll a banana weight for coho in the ocean. When should one use a dropper -vs- a banana weight. For back bouncing a dropper makes sense to me to keep bait just up off bottom. Is this trolling in the bay just off the bottom, and the lead is your bottom finder?

I dont much like divers and usually use lead. Give me an education on which lead shapes when.

Howdy Eggs. I fished with Gizmo today and he said to say hello. We fished the N.Fork Lewis this morning, got one big steelie and saw a few other scattered ones swim around my boat, but the bite was off in the low clear water. -- Those banana weights are good for ocean trolling, especially shallow for cohos. But the lead droppers used for trolling big plugcuts for chinook are to find and keep the bait near bottom out by the jetties and lower bays. Tear drop or cannon ball lead shapes are both good for this. - Steve - Edit: BTW, the further up the bays you troll the shorter the dropper, until it's down to 10 to 12" (Wheeler on up in Neh. & Bay City to Memalose in T-Bay).
