Re: Getting back into it, Salmon Steelhead help
This summer was my first year with steelhead, as well as flyfishing, but I did pretty well. I did just fine with a 9' 8wt, I have a Sage Launch and a Reddington RS3 with an Orvis Battenkill Mid Arbor reel. I used a Rio Steelhead line, but Im not sure about the backing. I yarded in at least 20 steelhead on the Launch rod before it broke due to my error, and another 5-6 on the Reddington. They both handled extremely well, and had enough backbone to fight the liveliest of fish. I would say if you are going to be mainly targeting salmon, you may want to jump up to a 9 or 10 wt, but if you are mainly targeting steelhead, 8 is where it is at. Hope that helps, Im not that experienced, but now you know my experience.
