Re: spyware symptoms
go to site:
http://www.help2go.com
this is an excellent spyware, malware help site. some very professional guys. go to the ALL FORUMS and pick spyware. register and ask for help. they appreciate some politeness.
they have a tutorial section that has four or five programs to install after you get clean that will do a first class job of keeping furture infections away. they also have an exe file that you can run, then cut and post the log into the forum and they can tell you exactly what is going on and how to fix it.
anti-virus alone isn't enough. spywareblaster, ad aware, spy guard, and some others are really a necessity anymore. there are way too many literate computer users out there that simply enjoy messing up your computer.

Re: spyware symptoms
well, not really,. especially a browser hijacker. and miscrosoft anti spyware is a mess. they really did a con job with that, since they gave you the beta releases but now are going to charge for the full release, which is not any better than a lot of the freeware out there. anyway, get spywareguard too. it is a good one. get ad aware, it compliments spybot. but this sort of shutting the gate after the horses got lose if you already got some kind of malware. you need to dump the bad program because they are like a bank account. they accrue interest and just keep getting bigger.

Re: spyware symptoms
it could be several things, but the first thing to check out is to see if it is malware. go to the site i suggeted. register. they have a tutorial for several great programs that you can take advantage of to run a check on your system. if that doesn't fix it, run their executable and post the log on the spyware forum. takes a couple days to go through the process but they are experts and it is worth it to get it fixed right. anyhow, sounds like you have had this for a time now already.
