Default SAUVIE ISLAND by the numbers 2005-06

Year 2005-06 (totals for east and west sides combined)

Birds taken: 20,094 (most since 1978-79 season)

Daily bird average: 379 (highest since 95-96)

Hunters total: 9129 (over 10,000 in 97-98 and 98-99)

Birds per hunter: 2.2 (highest since 79-80)

I thought the SI crowd might enjoy these stats. A friend of mine brought me a spread sheet of all the numbers from 1964-2006. This was the first year since the 1979-80 season that the number was over 20,000 and remember, geese could be shot for alot of seasons before the WMA closure. Tells you just how good it was, and just how many ducks we had this year. I hope everyone enjoyed it, it could be a few years before the island public sees a season like that again.

Here's the link to the numbers if you are interested in seeing them up close and personal.

An interesting stat for me was that since Jerry has been keeping this data....64-65 season I think, there has only been 5 more productive years than this one. That means this season (by the numbers) beat out 37 of the past 42 seasons...WOW!

One other thing to look at is the number of hunt days. We had a few more this year than in some of those "Glory" years. Hunter numbers on the WMA are still holding strong though...looks like they fluctuate with the bird counts...fairweather hunters perhaps??

Typical sauvie island, they come out when the numbers on the phone are good. Then there is one bad weekend day and they go away. Leaves more spots for you and me
