Default Good 30.06 Bear Round?

I'm doing a black bear trip in April and could use recommendations for what to shoot out of my 30.06. For elk, I do fine with 165 gr. Remington Core-Lokts. I'd rather not pay $50 for the ammo, but want to make sure I'm loaded with the right medicine.

I've shot 2 black bears with a 30-06 and 180 grain Speer Grand Slam bullets. Both worked really well. I don't think black bears are as tough to kill as Elk so your setup should be fine. Bullet placement is really the key, just like any animal.

elk are tougher than bears, you should be fine with what you got.

I agree 165 coreloc is fine I would like to have a dollar for every game animal that has been dropped with a corelok I would be rich. The 150 corelok is my favorite factory load in my 06.

I dont know what to use, but I know what not to use.
The only animal I ever lost was a bear, shot it with my .06 at 50 yards right in the zone, rolled it down the canyon, and it ran up the other side never to be seen again.
I wa using the remington 180 grain Sciciros (Spelling)
I know I hit him good, before it rolled down the hill it bit and clawed where I hit it, which was right behind the front shoulder crease, quartering away. Tracked that thing for two days with no results
Anybody else have a bad experience with the scicoros?

I've had great luck with the Sciroccos. Ive shot 5 elk with the 180 out of my 300 WIN, and my furthest retrieval was 20 yards. And Remington loads those for a lot of thier premium high velocity loads, especcially the ultra mag. If he was quartering away very much you might of slipped it between his shoulder and rib cage. When I take a quartering away shot I usually put it back a little further, almost to where the ribcage ends. Depending on the quartering angle.

IT depends on the distance thst you shoot. Long distance 180's drop like rocks. Maybe a lighter bullet 165 or 150 will still kill a bear. Nosler accubond does a good job ! I shot a bear at 460 yards 2 years a go with a 300 ultra mag right through the boiler room and he still ran a 150 yards, they are tough animals ,very compact.

That is not true. There is a lot less difference in trajectory between 150's and 180's than you might think. Just for comparison I looked up the trajectories for the 150 and 180 grain Scirocco bullets on Remington's site...the 180, when zeroed at 200 yards, is 23.9 inches low at 400 yards, while the 150 grain would be 21.1 low. Yep, only 2.8 inches difference at 400 yards. The other thing to keep in mind is the 180 with its higher ballistic coefficient, will drift much less in a crosswind. I would rather have the bullet that is better in wind, because I am not a good judge of wind speed and I am not good at adjusting my aim to compensate for wind.

Black Bear can be tough little @$%$$^%$ to kill sometimes. A "06" with 180 gr quality bullets is a good choice as long as there are not Brown Bear around. If there is use a 338 just in case one takes a liking to you. Shot placement is important when you hunt them. In SE Alaska I have shot many and at times even a 458 seem to little to put them down

The new Fed.Premium Barnes MRX in 180gr. looks pretty good. If they are out in time I might try them for Bear this spring.
