Default rifle project

i'm working on a weatherby vangaurd ss syn in 300 win mag. i have it bedded in epoxy, and i just ordered the new scope and rings, mounts. went with the new master series, simmons aetec 2.8x10x44 silver and silver rings and mounts from weaver. have some test rounds ready with nosler 180gr accubonds, so when all the parts get here, i'll be going out for long range testing. this rifle came with a bushnell scope and cheap weaver rings that jumped around. and the action lug to stock fit was sad. sometime it would not even keep bullets on a 9" paper plate.

How did difficult did you find it to bed it the plastic stock? Did the epoxy get a good bond on its own, or did you drill holes? What kind of bedding did you use?

Yeah post a report with how much it improved! Sounds like a fun project.

the epoxy i use is just general purpose epoxy, bondo type or red devil. cheapest you can buy, i just clean stock with acetone, or goof off in the area i want to bond. and just scratch the surface with exacto knife in a light crosshatch pattern. then put a good coat of release agent on the action metal. it will not take much epoxy, about a table spoon to bed the lug.you do not want to use to much epoxy or it will get in the lug screwhole or squish out the top of the stock. today i mounted the new silver weaver two piece mounts, with blue medium loctite, and put the new high silver weaver rings on the mounts. i also bought a set of medium rings but they will not work with the scope. i used a 40mm scope to check clearance and it was to close.should be perfect on the 44 in the high mounts.i have got the action cleaned up, and it is getting fairly smooth, the chamber still is a little rough, leaving light scratches on the brass. i used a dental tool to remove the worst of the burrs left by the manufacturer.still would like to run a reamer in it. but it will work for now.

I bought a Browning 300 win for my father-in-law last year and put the Simmons Aetec on it. This scope is great! Easy on the pocket book as well.

I am unfamiliar with the bedding of a gun's barrel. Can someone explain what it does, or what benefit(s) are obtained by doing it?

Thank you.

to bed the complete barrel is not normally done, the action and mounting lug are what is normally bed in epoxy of some type. it is done to minumize the movement in the stock. when you fire a bullet down the barrel it creates a harmonic vibration, like striking a tuning fork. bedding the action acts as a damper. allowing you to tune your ammo to your barrel. another damper point can be added at the forend of the stock, further tuning the vibration.

Are there certain calibers that benefit more from bedding, or can all gun benefit from the procedure?

Also, does the procedure result in a significant improvement in shot groupings?

There are a lots of benefits. The action and barrel are mounted with zero stress. The bedding is a perfect fit to the action, recoil lug, and barrel (or first few inches of barrel). Crushing of the stock under the guard screws can be prevented. Consistancy is excellent. You can remove a properly bedded action from the stock and re-install it, and still have the same point of impact, you dont have to sight in again. Generally, a properly bedded stock will help accuracy, it certainly will help consistancy. A properly bedded stock will not hurt accuracy, a improperly bedded stock will. A poor bedding job stresses the action which is not a good thing.

I wont have bolt action hunting rifle that isnt bedded.

Is bedding something an inexperienced person like me could do, or is it better to take it to a professional gunsmith?

buy a brownells or simular bedding kit, they includes all the directions and material to do the job.once you do one you will find out how easy it is. the bigest thing to remember, start small. on some stocks a tablespoon is all you need. it is easy to do multipal sets, but very hard to dig out over doing it.

Ive got some info and links I can send you if you want to do it yourself. Its easy to do, but easy to mess up if you dont know what you are doing. The most important things is use enough release agent, and make sure its stress free. I like marinetex epoxy, its thick like putty and doesnt run all over the place. When you are done it can look perfect, but you should be able to loosen and tighten either guard screws and have zero movement. If it moves at all you are stressing the action and you dont want that. I wouldnt trust just any old gunsmith to do it either.

Baltz,

Did you know you can now buy a standard (read, helluva lot better) Weatherby stock for the Vanguards? Can get them with pillar or block bedding. Dunno about the price. Got the info from a Weatherby rep at the sportsman's show.

this stock is the best synthitic stock i have seen, (on a less expensive rifle). the only issue i had with it, is where the action lug sits. if you know what the lug looks like, rear flat, front like the top of an oxbow. in the stock, this fit in a larger rectangular lug slot. a tablespoon of bedding epoxy solved my problem.

this is what a major optics supplier emailed me today on simmons master sreies scopes.-- I would look for an alternative scope. These master series were supposed to be new for last year. It’s already the 3rd month of 06 and we have yet to receive any from Simmons. Who knows when they will be in.

simmons spent millions on promoting these new scopes, and this is what we get. nothing, no products to buy. how would you like to be the guy with this production nightmare on your resume.

It's not just Simmons. Look at Ruger and their new Vaquero. It's a been over a year now and they still can't get any in the stores. Unfortunatly this is becoming more and more the norm instead of the exception.

cabelas finally had the silver aetec 2.8x10x44 in stock this morning. no one else did, so i'm paying about $35 over my normal suppiers advertised cost. but they still can not get it.the huge buying power of cabelas gets the products first. so in a week i should have it mounted. if cabelas is not lying about having it in stock, that has happened twice from two different suppliers, with this scope model so far.

scope came today just ordered the offset rings it takes to mount it on the weatherby it would be nice if the adds listed the aetec as a compact scope. very clear glass with a large picture, it feels like your looking through a 30mm scope.

clearest scope i have ever looked through, i'm thinking about breaking it in tomorrow. got some new targets to punch holes in. i'm going to be trying the new nosler accubond 165gr in this rifle, as soon as i get some from nosler. i have to go into bend next week, so i'll stop in and check again. rumor has it they are in 1st run production right now.

new scope worked great, adjustments are very positive, scope is the clearest i have ever looked through. but the rifle hates heavy bullets. i tried three different reloads and one factory. here is the factory target the reloads where on paper, is all i can say about them.

what is the rate of twist of the barrel? If you're unsure, put a fairly tight fitting patch on a cleaning rod, tight enough that it turns with the rifling as it's pushed through the bore.

Mark top dead center on the cleaning rod after it's in the bore, at least 15 or 16 inches back. Mark your starting point, push it into the bore until the rod makes a complete revolution. Mark the finish point, remove the rod, and measure.

regards, aw

that twist isn't horribly slow...

One of two things could be happening. Either your 180 grain bullet loads are pretty mild, or the rifle just doesn't like 'em.

Yeah I know that isn't real scientific. There are two ways to get a bullet stabilized- it's all about RPMs. Faster twist accomplishes that, or driving the bullet at a higher velocity.

Conventional wisdom is that that milder loads typically shoot better, but that's only if you're hitting the sweet spot in terms of revs/min.

Just a suggestion...nothing at all wrong with what you've got now.

I just had a 300 rebarreled in a 9 twist for that very reason. Fast twist barrels shoot as good as slow twist barrels, but will stabilize a wider range of bullet weights. While your 10 twist isn't slow, it's not fast either so maybe a velocity increase will help.

jmho, aw

how its shooting long bullets, i was expecting the weatherby specs to say it had a 1 in 12" barrel. i took apart one of the remington factory shells to see what they where using. i looks like re19 with a weight of 74gr with the 150gr coreloc. that would equal a couple books i have with about 3150fps out of a 24" barrel. now that i have some cases fired in this gun, i'll be loading up some 165gr accubonds with re22 in the 3200fps range

Nice looking rifle Richard. Have you had it back to the range since last time? After I got the Limbsaver on my new .300, it's a whole different ballgame to shoot. I'm hoping to get it out for some more fun on paper soon.

i need to get back out and test the 165 accubond load, you will notice the weaver rings, the front is an offset. the aetec would fit perfectly on a short action, but with this ring set it looks pretty good. also the sunshade being a different color, was a little disapointing, but since i did not know it came with the scope i like it anyway. the next thing i'll do is shim the forend, weatherby recomends having a little upwards pressure on their stocks, right now it is just touching.
