I drew a wilson trask tag. I know this sounds dumb but how do you know if the bear is legal to shoot? I want to get a bear but I want to be legal. Thanks

Cubs being the issue. It can be tough because the sows with cubs tend to be out more because they've got extra mouths to feed, so those are the ones you're more likely to see. On the east side, the sows with little cubs don't move much and we often see them on the same patch day after day. They also tend to be in protected places either up high or near cliffs. They'll be in and out in and out as the tend to little ones. They are usually small to medium sized - big bears seem to almost always be boars where we hunt. Consequently, if we see a medium-sized bear out in the middle of the day not moving around much particularly on a protected slope, it's usually a sow with cubs. However, if it's a bigger bear or covering some distance it's a safe bet to be a boar. The sows with 1-year cubs aren't as tricky - the cubs are up and about and usually pretty conspicuous. In that country, we have time to watch as we've moving in which gives us a good chance to make sure. West side bear hunters will have to weigh in how to hunt places like the Wilson unit, it's so thick if you don't seize your window of opportunity, you might not get another. The other issue is size - really tough to judge a little bear from a big bear at distance. Size of the ears relative to the head is one good indicator and I've heard some others but my experience has been that even little bears look big unless they are standing next to a bigger bear.

Wilson/Trask. My game plan is to glass hours on end. Then hopefully make a decent stalk and hammer down.

We'll probably go in low from Imnaha...if the snow stays low, so will the bears...and the turkeys.

I am looking at the tags authorized and tags drawn columns. I also looks like some south central tags will be leftover. Here is a link.

I bought a left over tag each of the last 2 years. This year I put in for a hard to draw unit and then SW as a second. Only 49 left over? Almost missed it. Might have to put in for SW as a first choice from here on out.

Well this will be my first hunt in the Snake R. unit so anyone feeling charitable and want to share some bear knowledge of the unit I'm ready to learn. I agree that the snow is going to keep us out for the early part of the season. Hopefully we can get in there for a bit though. I've got a couple of buddies heading over with me. Should be fun. I love spring bear hunting.

i tried to hunt the unit several years ago, when the tag covered the pinecreek unit also, but the snow was too deep. from what i know about the unit (very little) you will have to hunt from the bottom up this year. from the river side you need a jet boat camp, from the west side you need access to cow creek, lightning creek, horse and pumpkin creeks.

I've backpacked the SNR and I've horse packed it off and on for about 8 yrs now.
I wouldn't consider doing a day trip hunt in there if I was serious about actually getting a decent opportunity to shoot one. There are day trip hunts available if you can get up on the Hat Point road later in the season.
I have found that it takes about 3 yrs. to learn a new area--no matter what species you're hunting.
My partner and I will be up there with some shitters either at Cow Cr. or Freezeout this spring, don't know when. We will think about starting our hunt when we have gone about 10 mi.---------good luck

I am not sure what he weighed but my buddy and i couldn't budge him. My guess 400 ish I haven't got him measured should in the 19 inch range. I missed a big black boar in 2005 in the same area that was bigger than this bear. Yes he is on the wall almost 6 ft nose to tail. He was shot at 460 yards, on the last day of the season. 300 ultra mag. I will give the people who drew wenaha tags some hints. Jubilee lake and looking glass fish hatchery. Good luck !
