Tying Roundtable - it was fun
So it has been motioned and seconded in another thread that we put together a tyer's roundtable.
We would all get together and tie different bugs with each tyer teaching a pattern to the group. Of course there would need to be "refreshments" on hand as well, so I was thinking if we could talk a local pub or restaruant in to a banquet room we'd be golden.
Does this sound like a good idea? If we get this going who's in? It could even become a monthly event!!
PARTICIPANTS:
1- Nookslayer (CONFIRMED)
2- Meskel (CONFIRMED)
3- Plem (CONFIRMED)
4- KEB (CONFIRMED)
5- Mandinga (OUT OF TOWN)
6- Pultz
7- Mark Vickers (CONFIRMED)
8- Stew (CONFIRMED)
9- Mpruet (CONFIRMED)
10- Blue Tip Spinner (CONFIRMED)
11- Chromaflage (CONFIRMED)
12- GBS (CONFIRMED)
13- LNF (CONFIRMED)

Depends on where and when, but I think it sounds like a great idea. Maybe even someone could teach me how to do a whip finish since Greenbuttskunk won't.

brad taught me and i can't understand why the guy wouldn't show you. did you ask him nicely? (you have to say "pretty please with sugar and spice" in order to get him to do it. yes it was a weak time in my life when i had to ask another man like that. i am still crying in the shower to this day!!!)

Re: Tying Roundtable
I'm in. Maybe try to set it up at a fly shop- Don at RIVerCity would be into this I bet- I'll ask. The guys at Country Sport could be- I'll ask. Or we could pick a sight down town? Lot's of bars that would and some are nonsmoking- like Old Tavern Inn on Garden Home road or The Ship- Captain'd be into it. The Shilo in the cigar bar- that'd be sweet with a game on and stoggies. I'll ask my boys down at Oregon Trout. I'll check with the Wild Salmon Center- remind me Richey.
This could be SWEET if done right.

Re: Tying Roundtable
these are all good ideas for a venue and it sounds like this will be on the west side. I'm sure Don would be down but I would feel bad to ask him to be there for anything other than his own enjoyment. I think the Old Market Pub would be a good spot since they have a large backroom area unless you can do something better Plem. Any other ideas guys?

Re: Tying Roundtable
OK Guys, tyingfool has put out feelers with great sucess!!!
The guys down at Oregon Trout have offered up their conference room for this as well as beverages for 6 to 10 people.
Don at River City has also offered up his joint for us. This is quickly becoming an event.
What I need now is 10 people that would like to be involved and some suggestions as to when to have it. 3 spots are already taken leaving 7 for those who would like to join in. This should be a really fun event.
Please reply to this thread so I may update the participants and see your date suggestions. There will be more than one so we'll keep you posted.

I am very interested. However, I am very new to tying and would probably be asking more questions than providing input.
If you don't mind a newbie, I'm in.

Re: Tying Roundtable - updated!!!
GREAT!!!! We have a full plate. We are working with Oregon Trout and River City for dates on this right now. I will have an answer for you all shortly. I will try to get it on a Wednesday for you mpruet.. and BTS I'm all in for the getup you'll be sporting.
There will be varying degrees of tenure at this event so some of you will need to be a little patient, but it should be a real blast. If this event turns out well, it will become a reoccuring thing. If any of you have questions please PM.

hey bone head- BTS said "not a Wednesday night". Can't read, can't hike or wade. What is goin on with you? BTW- I'll find out when OT can have us and more than likely it will be later in March (their big auction is the 10th) and Don has classes- remind me tomorrow and we can get a date- not a Wednesday....

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
we had a great round table tonight and Nook and Meskel and I were wondering if you guys would rather have a bunch of guys sit around tying flies or have a favorite pattern and show the technique for tying them.
We could bounce around or do this with a bit more formal "instruction/teaching"
Any thoughts? I wouldn't mind seeing something I haven't seen or show others something I really like.
As I understand it, we have half dozen guys or so. The round table tonight had an instructor that showed a couple of bugs- brought enough material for others and helped them get one done so everyone could go home and fill their boxes with new bugs.

Chrome, you're in. We were also able to add a few more chairs.
Plem brings up a good point. It was really fun to watch a person tie a new bug and then help everyone else do the bug they showed. I have no problem bringing enoght materials for abug to share if people don't have what they need. I think it will be a great way to learn some new bug and techniques.
Say hey to my new pup for me Kerry!

Count me in. Just an idear, but... how about pick one bug (leaves everyone wanting to come back for more), and a demonstration fly (perhaps a Vickers or Stew Atlantic Salmon fly), and then time for general technical assistance for whoever needs it.

You've got to be kidding (or buying me quite a bit of beer) if you think I'm going to do a tie in front of a bunch of you. I can't handle that kind of pressure, nor would you want to sit and wait an hour as I tie one of these things.
That said, depending on the time and day, I'll be there and I'll bring along my spey/dee/atlantic tying stuff.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
Yea I would have to say that the “pattern” we choose need not be a fly that takes an hour to tie.
I wouldn’t mind showing how to tie a fly that works and is relatively simple. Im sure some of you will even tie it better then I can and have some ideas on how to customize it, and that is what this is all about. I would actually encourage this. Also being that it is a relatively easy pattern I could supply the materials for at least one tie. (the beer is a different story)

No problem... I will bring an InFocus, a digicam and the Treo... you can sit in a corner, facing the wall, and tie away... we'll just watch you on the bigscreen. As for beer, didn't you just brew some.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
I'm already in and look forward to getting together.
For, me, as a beginner, I would love to see a demo of a few simple to tie flies, maybe one each for Steelhead, Salmon and Trout.
For me this is going to be an opportunity to tie, which I haven't had a lot of time to do, learn and meet new folks.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
so Nooky- how many is that? I gotta make sure we all will fit in their conference room.
As for the bugs or the forum- let's get a consensous and determine a format. Vickers, I'd love to see a Jock Scott or Gordon- but have the feeling that fishable flies might be a more appropriate way to go for the first cast at this.
Nook set this up- let's confirm the date, get a head count, determine what we're doing and put this baby in ink. I imagine a couple of hours would be a decent time frame (give or take an hour- more than likely take) and I'll set it up with the lads at OT.
On another note- Meskel.... if you want to take some BP before, bring your helmet and be prepared to get plunked many, often and much. Switch hitter for sure.

I thought that this was a fly fishing board and your going to go there? “Nuke” That’s cool you will get your chance some day.
And yes I can bat from both sides of the plate. By the end of this year I will also be able to fish from both my left and right as well. That way I can use nookslayer’s plethora of rods.

Not likely unless you want to spend all day watching me fumble my way through. Besides the guy that taught me, Hal Gordon, is a master and I wouldn't want to bring shame upon his teaching skills.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
I also took the Hal Gordon class and other than a bad marrying of wings- really learned a lot. Can't seem to grasp that well- my fault not his. I would highly recommend that taking tying classes from a pro would help all level of tiers.
Then graduating to Atlantic Salmon bugs when you really need to turn it on. A great way to get through the winter when the prince nymph, Adams and all the other standards get a little old.
Once again- River City is the place where tiers go to get supplies and learn the craft.
Man I love these little Graemlins!

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
OK guys thats all we have room for.... this time. Plem talk to the boys and let them know we have 13 guys for the table. Let's get a date and time firmed up, preferably after the auction.
As for all of the participants, no worries on tying in front of guys. I am the foremost rookie in the group I'm sure and will make you all feel good about yourself. Plem and Meskel can confirm that.
This is going to be a good time and a way for us to get together and maybe learn something? Who cares! Bugs, beers and fishing stories among the guys sounds fun!
We'll hav ethe date and time set by tomorrow!

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
Lads- the deals done. Nook- put a real list together so we can maybe get a guy to show a total stranger something he's seen/liked. The LIFTER has been money- Meskel has a simple biot stone he needs to show me.
I didn't expect 14 guys- Tom Tattum of Oregon Trout, our gracious host will be joining us. Great guy, with a job IN FISHING. I hope everyone can make it- I'm looking forward to meeting you guys.
Chatting with total strangers has always felt odd to me- shaking a hand and putting a face with the name... gonna be nice.
Get there on time to get a good spot and I'm gonna block out 3-3.5 from the younglings so momma get's to put them to bed.
Oh yeah, it's on the 23rd of March @ 6. 65 SW Yamhill- 2nd floor. Really nice office and they have some great pieces of art.
If you have flies for the Trout/Caddisswap- go ahead and bring em- save the post.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
OK GUYS!!! WE'RE ALL SET!!!
Thursday March 23rd at 6pm will be the roundtable. Oregon Trout will be hosting this roundatable at their offices. The address is 65 SW Yamhill in downtown Portland(97204). There will be adult beverages on hand.
The premise will be to see different bugs that other people are tying and to maybe get a little tutalage in how to do it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to bring enough material that you can share with others that may not have the right stuff for that specific fly.
This should be a really fun event and will continue as we get more venues involved. Don from River City has graciously offered his tying room as well for an event. If any of you have venues that you would like to suggest and or offer please let myself or Plem know.
PLEASE RSVP TO ME VIA PM OR THIS THREAD SO I CAN KEEP AN ACCURATE HEAD COUNT
See you all there!

I'm in and now realize that Oregon Trout is, literally, within about 25 yards of where I work

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
Just a quick clarification because I was asked- everyone needs to bring their own vises, tools, materials, etc. If someone wants to do a fly for a group- bring enough material to pass around to all and we can have a how to deal.
Otherwise- beers and vino will be provided- but hors devours are BYO snacks. This will be a great time and we'll meet all the names we write/chat at on the boards.

Sittin her tyin, watching Kelley's Heros while a kid sleeps and the wife's at the store. Anybody have something they'd like to "show off" or "show how"?
I'm tying some #18 BWO that I did for the swap for my own box while scanning messages. We have some pretty accomplished tyers in this group who could probably snap off a beauty the rest of us haven't seen.
Any volunteers? Keep in mind- if you stick it out there- yer gonna have to show everyone, bring the goodies for each and work with some folks. Any volunteers?

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
Plem I would be happy to display the F-111. It is a relatively easy pattern that can be slightly altered to cover a wide variety of bugs. It won’t take long, and to make it even more simple I will show it with a size 10 dry stone fly.(I can supply all the materials)
Like I said it will not take long because there is not much to it so you will need to fill more time with other patterns or just have lots of beer.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
One down- I figure 2 or 3 more guys want to do something and that would take 1/2 to 3/4 of the time, the rest can be what ever.
I know this bug guys- and a great Mayfly/attractor that really only takes about 3 materials unless you want to dress it up more than necesary.
You guys will really be impressed- Meskel is not only willing, but also clearly proficiant enough to tie for a group of seasoned vets. And dude has the fevor so bad- everything he knows is predominantly self taught with some very creative ideas that I've really liked so far.
I would be willing to do one if need be- but am in no hurry as I'm sure we'll have a fairly consistant series once we get the ball rolling and fine tune after a couple of initial bumps and bruises.

We'll miss you Mandinga. Sorry to hear that you won't be able to come.
As for the rest of you, let's enjoy this event. If all goes well this will become a monthly or bi-monthly thing!

so should each participant mention which fly we'll tie ahead of time. If so, I'm doing a shell-back scud.

Re: Tying Roundtable - FULL!!! (but more to come)
That sounds great KEB! I'm still very much a rookie, but I have got a pretty desent variation of the lifter (and I forgot who tied the one who caught Meskel's first steelhead, sorry).
I'm anxious to see what everybody does.
Kerry, Pultz you still in for this ?????
