Swap for Trout this season
I want to do one- with a twist. I want to do a series that will be relevant for the coming season. Get 8-12 folks that want to do a mayfly, then a caddis and then a salmon fly. Each pattern will be of any of the bugs phase and get a varying mix of "bugs that kill it." Also include a brief description with name, hook size, and some tips for tying. A little toe tag with info.
March Browns are almost here- an emerger, dry, a cased- what ever.... they just have to be tried and true. Then move onto caddis- but not the typical ELK HAIR CADDIS. A pupae, an emerger, maybe a diver, or a cripple. Maybe an array of dries that the fish don't see 7 days a week that really work.
Then the big boys. Not a Clark stone or Stimulator- but something that works on the McKenzie, D, Yak, down south, Metolius- great bugs we don't see in every catalog or shop.
I want to do it so that the people that sign up, get the first series done in 2-3 weeks, then move to the caddis, then the stones. Good tiers that are serious about the craft and catching fish. Who's in?
1-PLEM- MARCH BROWN DRY done & in
2-PLEM- BWO DRY done & in
3-PULTZ- May Fly Nymph done
4-PELHAMENT- March Brown Quil body Parachute done & in
5-MESKEL done & in
6-MESKEL done & in
7-SALMONSLAYER2 done & in
8-NOOKSLAYER done & in
9-Vickers done & in
10-Killer Dave done & in
11-GRSTEELIES done & in
12-GRSTEELIES done & in
I look forward to this one. Let's get er done. 10 flies is a good number and if youg guys can get these to me by say the 17th of March- we can do the caddis and have those done by the end of the first week in April and then the big boys by the end of April so plenty of time to catch all of these hatches.
Thanks and I am anxious to see your handy work.
PS- we lost two flies from GRSTEELIES. He punted on account of some other swap. I assume we will have no more problems and we can all play nice and on time.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
My batch will include:
1) Mayfly......PMD Sparkle Dun
2) Caddis..... Iris Caddis Emerger
3) Salmonfly...BRF Sunken Stone
I learned to tie these from my friends at Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone. You can go to the website and check them out if you like.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
If there is a volunteer among you that would like to tie a second, I'll tie 2 and Meskel will. If this happens, I'll start us running and we can see if we can get this done in time for March Brown (if anyone decides to go with a March Brown).
On another note- the cold weather today did not deterr a steelhead from taking my fly and coming home with me. The reason I bring this up, is the fly that got the fish came from a steelhead swap we did a month of so ago. I really like the idea of getting some good/hot buds from others.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
swap is ALMOST full and closed- AWESOME! Go ahead and get started and the three weeks will go fast and then you can to these to me and I will send you each a message with my address. If we can do this prior to three weeks, we should have a great start on the big may flies.
Also, if you know what you are tying, let me know and I'll adjust the board to reflect this. Pultz and GRSTEELIES are already off and running and the rest of us should do the same.
I look forward to this and good tying.

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
Plem
You have me perplexed on this one. Frankly I had to look up what exactly a may fly is. And yet I am expected to come up with a pattern is tried and true. See the dilemma I find myself faced with. And to think that I am responsible for two sets – so far this is what im shooting for.
May Fly 1 Spundun size 20 – a little small but meant for those itching to use 3 wts
May Fly 2 F-111 size 14
Caddis Fly 1 - speckled Goddard Caddis
Caddis Fly 2 TBD
Salmon Fly 1 TBD
Salmon Fly 2 TBD
Sue me I like to use these swaps to try new patterns. (ie: Alien) And if a size 20 is to small let me know I will come up with something else and keep those for personal consumption on my local river.
Thanks
Meskel

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
A-ight, I've closed it up and let's start tying so we can get these out for the month of March hatches.
Trout season is alive and well and a few of us (Nookslayer and Meskel) + another lad are hitting the McKenzie this week end- so a report will follow from one or all of us. I'm sure Nook will have a great time- just not sure he'll catch any fish , but Meskel will learn him I'm sure.
I have my first set done, and almost finished with the second, so if you guys can get going, this will work out great for the time of year.

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
Nice Plem thanks for hosting this thing. My first set is done. Im needing some direction on my second set but im sure you could offer some suggestions tonight.
Im sure Nookslayer will get into some fish this weekend. That is if he can relax enough with me on the sticks (for the first time) in his drifter(first time as well). Not to worry I am bringing my water wings.

we just picked up Mark Vickers as a late entrant- good to have such a quality tier. Let's get the may flies to me by March 14th (that gives us all a couple more week ends) and then we'll have the caddis due 3 weeks later (give or take a day or so).

Re: Swap for Trout this season- Ty one more
Well my first set is done. I could not find a pattern I really liked so I went with an old stand by for this time of year with a twist
I tied up a modified hairs ear
Hook Mustad Signature C49s size 14 with a Caddis curve for the swimming effect
the rib I used small larva lace in a translucent green color it gives a more subtle sheen then gold or copper rib
While I am not the best tier in the word I know this pattern catches fish my last three trips to the crooked I have used this pattern and did quite well. Now on to the next set. rp

Re: Swap for Trout this season- Ty one more
Ok Set #2 is done it is a Green rock worm
Tied on Mustad size 12 hooks
the body is made with green Larva lace and wow this stuff looks good.
the head is fine black fur.
I tied an extra half dozen for me cause these things look good. if they dont catch fish then nothing will. rp
PS all of my flies are un weighted I like to use a double fly set up with the top fly the tool fly then one of thies smaller flies. rp

So, if I am reading this right. Our 12 mayflies are due on March 17th, then we will be given a due date for caddis and so on and so forth...

Re: Swap for Trout this season- Ty one more
and so it is written. If everyone is good with this- March 17th for the May Flies and then 3 weeks later for the caddis- making those April 7 and the big lads another 3 out for a last due date of April 28th.
Everything will be right on time for their respected starts to the season and we should even have a little time to duplicate the ones that really catch our eyes for the season. Look in good lads, lookin good.

Plem,
You need to get away from the Orange (Fins) color and go to something that fits you. How about Black and White?
We need to get the boats together and you can show me a thing or two on how to catch fish

How we comin lads? Some of you have started on your second sets. If you want to start sending them in (May Flies)- it will force me to get figure out how to do pictures and we can start seein the handy work. Will motivate the guys that are draggin (Nook....) and get us excited about what is happening on the rivers and lakes.
Since our deadline is out on the others, if you get those done early and want to send them all or combined- I'm pretty sure I can keep track of them.

Plem
All right 30 flies left today with the post master. 10 spunduns size 20. 10 F-111s size 16. And 10 ‘Casi por’ Caddis size 14.
30 down and 30 more to go.
I didn’t send return postage I figured I would just get my flies at the round table. Im sure I will have more to give you then.
Thanks again for running this juggernaut.

I've had a few of you ask if these can arrive early if you get ahead of the schedule- ABSOLUTELY. For those that are tracking to be right on time- hopefully this week end will afford you the chance to finish and get the May's out. Not sure if we'll be able to fish then this year- till say July, but at least we'll have some sweet new bugs to copy. If any of you are attending the Oregon Trout auction tonight- I'll be the guy in orange.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
Got my #16 Spinner Cripples completed. Normally I hate tying flies this small, but I'll admit, I had a really fun time tying something completely new for me. This is an enjoyable pattern to tie. I'll probably tie up a bunch more for my own fishing this summer.
In fact, I'll even throw in a guarantee since this is the first time I've tied this pattern. If the fly you get from me falls apart on you due to a tying flaw, send me a SASE and I'll mail you replacement.

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
Wow, fumble! If no one else knows my address, please let me know- I sure don't need to be the guy holdin us all up.
Since we are due to have the bugs in by Friday- let me know if you want to skip the return postage and I'll just bring them to you if you are coming to the tying swap down town at OT on the 23rd.
I expect to get some bugs tomorrow and will obviously inform when I get them. Lookin forward to getting these in on time and back to everyone. Anybody catchin fish yet? I'm heading down to the Umpqua for my last trip for winters before trout season really kicks into full swing- won't be chasin metal heads (might sneak off to the coast occasionally) and focus on trout till August-ish. There are a few stock runs that hit certain rivers, but really like the entomology and bugs. Dry fly trout fishin still can't be beat in my opinion.

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
Salmonslayrers arrive today, and look great. Couple of great bugs. I imagine I'll get more tomorrow as most of you have stated "checks in the mail."
As soon as I get them I'll turn them. If you'd rather they leave with you at the swap on the 23rd- send me a PM.

Re: Swap for Trout this season- NEED ONE MORE TYER
Nookslayer is off and runnin, finished a real NICE collection of duns AND spent $80 at RC. Very nice laddy. We are all glad to have you in the craft and I can guarantee the rest of you that he'll be big for the swaps to come.
Just opened a great package from Vickers and his look FRIGGIN OUTSTANDING! Cripple that will be duplicated TONIGHT and see no reason why this couldn't be an amazing pattern for the BWO right now, PMD, PED and I'm really gonna be curios to see it float as a big Marchy or G Drake.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
Ooooohhh laddies.... got two more today. Pelhament & Killer Dave brought the HEAT! @#$%&* OUTSTANDING!!!! Pultz is last to the dance- so he's got some big shoes to get in. I am amazed and if I could figure out this camera deal (Meskel- write it down) I'd have been showin them off as I got them, so yall'll (wow, a llllot of lllll's) have to wait just a bit longer. I did a stealhead swap that was very nice- but I am WAY more impressed with how every May Fly has looked for this one.
Assuming Pultz' show Monday, they'll all go back out Tuesday for next week end's fishin.
Spokane is our furthest team member, a guy on Hood, most from W PDX and a couple down I-5. What I'm getten at is these all work right here, right now. I CAN'T WAIT to wrap up my winter steelheading in 3 weeks and focus on this series until July (maybe a little bass on the JD for 3-4 days - anybody wonna organize that? And if anybody is interested, every May some lads I know and I go out DePoe Bay to fill the freezer/BBQ with our annual limit of seabass, lingcod and cabazon on 8-10 wts. Great time and I'd be more than happy to host one of these- however, organizing isn't my thang... again, but I'm in.)
Sorry for the left turn, back to trout flies. If I could make a cordial request: everyone do a quick post on your bug(s) with all pertainent items to be listed. If you have any tips, methods, advise or what ever that took you 6 to figure out- don't be shy:
Hook: model would be great, but size and style is fine
threat: anything special?
tail:
thorax: be very specific here- I think this is where most people miss
rib:
wing:
parachuate: this one, and any others that would work
hackle:
what ever I've missed. If you've been in a bottle and gabby, tell us a day this bug worked and some basics there too.
I've only tied one pattern I've recieved so far, and decided to wait for this to do the rest. Nice work fellas.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
Word has come down that the last set is arriving in the next day or so by pony express and I will send them out. For those coming to the round table Thursday, I might as well just bring them because you'll get them quicker and can show the others the fine work put into these beauties.
For those not coming- check your mail box Friday-ish and you are really gonna be impressed.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
Checked the mail box today and no flies. I'll swing by tomorrow afternoon before the tying round table at OT. If there are there, I'll bring them to those who attend. The rest will go out in the mail Friday.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
if you're coming ot the tying round table tonight, just bring them with you and I can divy them up. Our due date was the 17th, so we all have three weeks from then to get our caddis in so we can get them turned in time for the salmonflies.

Re: Swap for Trout this season
Holey Toledo... the flies arrived today. They'll go back out tomorrow.
A bit of advice: if you would like flies back in good condition- send them in something that is large enough to keep them from getting smashed. And there were some great package set ups that some of you employ. I'm not sure how to start a chat on different ways to ship- but we have everything from the large peanut foam in a zip lock bag with a few extra peanuts to keep the bag filled for space. Then we have a guy that sent a small foam filled fly box. Another of you sent your bugs in a compartment style (bead holder?) with about 6 inches of that bubble plastic - ya know the kind that pops. Yet another was the Altoids can with TP in the top and bottom. Very cool stuff.
Caddis flies are due here on the 14th of April. Some will be large and the last set very large so pack accordingly and I look forward to the Caddis. I'm doing 2 with one a diver and the other a dry.
Nice to meet some of you at the tying round last week.
