Default Kona underwater pics (updated for day 2)

Hey all,

Over here in Kona on business, but have figured out how to get some diving in as well. Just like back home, the surf is BIG here, limiting a lot of dive locations. I did manage to get 4 dives in yesterday, but looks like today might be a bust due to the surf. Pretty stirred up yesterday, and while the vis wasn't horrible, it wasn't great. Nothing spectacular, but still nice to dive in warm water!

Here's a few from yesterday......

Saw Sea-turtles everytime i dove underwater in Kona and Maui.
Beautiful creatures!

If you dive by the Lava beds/cliffs you got a chance of running into a Giant Travally, saw a few blue travally, under 5lbs for the most part.

Sweet pics. I'm going to Kona in March, so those pics have me jazzed up. What kind of camera? Those don't look like underwater point and shoot variety.

Whaler man- Everything is going off right now. Hapuna is big, and even the inside breaks are pumping in town. Gets me reminiscent of my days living on Maui when I body boarded jsut about every day. All the diving I'm doing is from shore. Just brought all my gear and rented a couple tanks for the week from Jacks Diving Locker.

Camera is my Oly C5050z with a Sea&Sea strobe. Was planning on using my Nikon with my Ikelite DS-125 strobe set and the Sea&Sea as the 2nd to fill shadows, but I it wasn't firing before I left.

Nalu,,, You got to do the night dive.. head out with Kona Coast divers at sundown and you will be treated to Manta Ray Madness for an hour. Rated 1 of the top 10 dives in the world!

I have done it 3 times and there are always mantas coming in to the lights.. very cool.

Well, today was the first "work" day, and with the high surf I only managed to get 2 dives in compared to the 4 yesterday.

Again, water was fairly turbid, but all in all it was still decent diving, and not terrible vis.

Gus- I am staying at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay. The flood lights out front are where the Mantas gather. I plan on doing a night dive Wed. night from shore if the surf calms down. They have been cancelling the boat dives due to the high surf. I have had the opportunity to dive with Mantas before, and they are really cool. In fact, some of my first "good" pictures were of Mantas, and they sort of got me hooked into more photography.

Flatwater- I have dove the City of Refuge 3 times now since I've been here. One of the few places the surge has allowed a decent entry/exit. Other places so far have been at Mile 4, and at Old Airport.

Nothing spectacular today, but did get the opportunity to swim close to one Spotted Eagle Ray for awhile. Took a little video, but for the most part the ray was too far away for really good still shots. Also saw some big Ono, and 2 big Ulua out cruising. Not close enough for shots, but big bruddas.

Here's a few of todays pics....

Great pictures Mike...almost makes me want to dive (but probably won't) when we come there in March...I'll probably stick to turkey hunting and finding a quiet beach for my wife.
