Default The Scariest Storm!

Wow! This is the scariest storm I've been in, in a while. I don't know why, but I just have a feeling about this one.

We are having sustained winds of 45 and up.

The barometer is now 29.75 and steady.

The gusts, though, are huge and the rain is coming down by the buckets!

Somehow, I feel like this is going to be a nasty storm, with flooding. We'll see!

Just got back from dinner in town! The waves on the bay are huge and the driving was dangerous. What a trip!

Wasn't too bad here in the hills of Portland until about an hour ago. Wind has picked up and has been raining hard non-stop. Keeping fingers crossed for everybody in the lowlands!

Cable and lights went out for a while, and Bill and I read this McClosky book about Alaska to each other. What fun! I haven't read aloud in ages, nor been read to!

Dang, those are good books, though. We both wanted to read the same book, so we just shared!

Hmmm, wonder what that's gonna do over here. It's already snowing a bit and pretty good up higher.

I hope it's not too bad for you. I've always thought storms were kind of exciting. But it's really annoying when the power goes out. And trees blow over.

I had to go to Toledo yesterday and remove the roof from my parents garage, off the ground , so they could get their cars out. What a mess! Power was off all day, with a couple of snapped off poles.
It's blowing over there now, and hope it doesn't take any trees down on the garage and finish the demo job.

Footnote: Mom just called and more roof is laying on the ground.

I love storms, too... It's just that this one, with so much rain, and living so close to the river.... kind of gives me the eebie geebies.

The only thing that scares me is that we live near a steep mountain. Stay mountain! Stay! I'm sure it won't happen, but if it did, it could push the river and the river will come and get me!!!

LOL...

I'm sure it won't happen, but in my darkest moments I get some scary thoughts going on!

When my RLS starts acting up theres a storm brewing! Eeeks!

http://newweb.wrh.noaa.gov/mesonet/getob...&banner=off

We had a gust of wind up to 71 according to this chart.

I don't like the wind. Several years ago the wind blew out our glass sliding door also it blew out our 14 foot garage door. It also blew off our roof on our shed out back. Dennis saw it as it came apart and flew into the air then came crashing down right in front of him. Eeeeeksssssssss!

Marie PS Looks like NO sleep tonight!

The biggest gust at the Newport airport today has been 63 MPH. The wind has managed to damage more trees and fences in our neighborhood and is continuing to gust around 55 MPH now. My BBQ got blown from one end of the deck to the other and finally tipped over. I had to take the cover off of it, as it was acting as a sail.

I was outside a few minutes ago. It was dry and the wind was almost warm. Kinda eeary...

Stay in and stay dry!

At the Garibaldi CG station, they had a gust of 71, but sustained winds have been over 60 MPH for the last 3 hours and over 45 or so since early afternoon. There's a lot of air moving!

I hope things stay buttoned up and dry for you and all my friends on the coast, Marie!

We're watching the weather channel, and a warning just came across the screen. It says: strong winds will return to the northwest oregon and southwest washington after midnight. Winds will reach to 30 mph, and gusts over 50mph, then decreasing after 6 am Monday. The Siuslaw River jetty had a 70+ mph gust at about 8 PM.

Well, before our power went out, we recorded the last sustained gust at 75.

Winds reported in Tillamook to 91.

I did not sleep a wink until 3:30 AM.

That was a record storm for us. I wonder how much damage was done. I just heard awful crashing of trees all night. Man, oh man.... That was something else!

I'm just toast! I wouldn't have gotten up but I have a doctor's appointment. I think I'll cancel it. No way I can drive to Portland like this! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Can't wait to see the river!

So weird. I was laying in bed and the gusts actually pushed my bed around! Or, felt like it, anyway! And our house is air tight!

Man! Mother Nature is awesome and powerful and yes, "How Great Thou Art" played through my mind!!!

Jennie,

One of my good customers asked me to take a backyard picture.

Can you get a Kilchis Backyard picture?

I'll try and get one also. One of our old trees

fell into the river and is just stuck there! Hope it

doesn't cause a mock dam. One less tree!

Marie

Hope you all are okay over there. The river is still

coming up.

Yes, I can, later... I'll sleepwalk out there.

Actually, I've already been, in my bathrobe and hipboots.

It's rockin' and rollin' out there.

It was too dark for a picture at that time.

It's actually windier today then it was at any time yesterday, up here on the wetside of Mt Hood.

How many of you are old enough to remember a little storm we had on Oct.12, 1962??? I was a kid, and we lived in an old two story house in Banks. When the lights went out my parents made go to bed(upstairs), and I thought the house was going to blow away like in "the Wizard of Oz". The next day was clam and mild, but what a mess! The roof blew off the library at the high school in town, and trees were strewn everywhere. We lost a huge old oak tree in our backyard.

I checked with google about the Columbus Day Storm and found a few peak wind gusts.

Portland...116 mph
Mt Hebo....131 mph
Cape Blanco..145+ mph (but the anemometer was damaged and experts believe the winds topped out at close to 170 mph)
