Be on the lookout !
I like visiting the lookout towers in areas I hunt. For one thing they're usually on a high point and offer a great view of the surrounding areas. I've been able to pinpoint potential hunting spots just by glassing from a lookout.
Can anybody guess which lookout this is? Difficulty level(easy)

Yep! I knew it was too easy, but I've always liked the lighting of the sky in that pic, so I thought I would share.

Great Picture. Do you have any of the view from up there? I too love going up to the lookouts. Just cool being up there and looking down. The view are great.

Re: Be on the lookout !
Some weekend I'd like to rent one of those. I think it would make for a fun getaway during the winter.
Last time I was inside a fire lookout I used their radio to call OSP about an elk a guy poached during archery season.

Re: Be on the lookout !
You must have been out on the next hump, to the Northwest. That kinda threw me, but sure did look familar. I swear they keep adding more radio, cell stuff every year.

Re: Be on the lookout !
Yep, it was evening and looking east. Fields Peak and McClellan Mtn can be seen just to the left of the lookout.
MarlinMark...I'm pretty sure I have more pics from up there, but not sure if I can find them. But I'll look for some.

Re: Be on the lookout !
Two questions:
Where is Aldrich?
How do you go about renting one of those things for a night or two?

Re: Be on the lookout !
Aldrich is southeast of the town of Dayville in the Malheur National Forest. But if I remember correctly, the lookout is a State of Oregon lookout?
Contact the national forest headquarters where you think you might want to stay, they should have all the info. They only rent them during the winter months, so you have to snowshoe or x-country ski to get up to them. Snowmobile also!
I know the Flag Point lookout west of Dufur is one lookout in the Mt Hood National Forest that get's rented in the winter. It overlooks the Badger Creek Wilderness.

Re: Be on the lookout !

I used to cover for Sam on his day's off. I've had some awesome experiences up there. One day we had a bunch of cells moving through the west Ochoco but they weren't coming in my direction at Aldrich. AS the day progressed I was getting really frustrated because I wanted some of the action. Once you get fire and lightning in your blood it's as addictive as anything in this world.
About three in the afternoon I had a doosy of a cell build and set on top of me. The energy in that cell was incredible. It just continued to build and build. The flag pole and the OSP repeater in the picture were buzzing so loud with electricity I went and sat on my glass insulated stool and waited. Pretty soon the first crack of thunder that came out of the clouds was an explosion that had to rival any ordinance the military could come up with. The show began soon after. I had a bolt come down in the grassland straight south of me that lit up acre sized blaze within several minutes.
At the time my wife was on another lookout east of Prineville that we called home for the summer. It was really cool to be able to mirror flash each other from 80+ miles away.
Thanks for the memories Ron.
