Default Silvies Unit Elk?

I am wondering how you gents did in the Silvies unit last season for Elk? My group hunted there 2 years ago for the first time and did not get any thing, but we were very close. As we did not get the draw last year we are wanting to put in for it again this year.

So, those of you who hunted the unit, how did you do? 1st Season or 2nd?

Thanks,

Andrew

We used to do fairly well in the past, but the last three seasons we've hunted have been very bad for us. We've only killed two bulls out of the last three. My party had to leave because of snow this year. We alway's hunt second season. Kris.

Archery hunted it this year and it was poor @ best

The number of animals was way down from what I am used to seeing and we only got 1 bull. I only saw 13 elk in 12 days of hunting.

If I would of been there, we probably would have. My Dad and a few of the older guy's got kind of spooked by the wet snow falling on the wall tents. I archery hunted Oregon and idaho for elk instead of rifle last year. they did get into some elk, but not very many. Kris.

Haev hunted that unit for archery for several years. That being said we are looking for new elk area. Last years deer hunting was hard to beat. There are some absolute pigs over in that country. I just wish that ODFW would cut back the hunts. I think last year there was pressure from Aug until Feb. With rifle hunts going on during archery season.

We have hunted this unit for a long time. Used to have very good success. The last 5 years or so, the number of elk on the public land has went WAY down. A buddy of mine hunted 1st season, and talked to a private ranch to see if he could hunt. The owner said NO, and they had about 400 head on their property. Then the owner said the ranch next door had at least twice that many! Keep in mind that the reported elk heard in the Silvies unit is listed at 2,200 animals. Now do the math and you know where all the elk are. Very sad. Needless to say we are probably hunting elk elsewhere in the future. Best of luck to you...

Well, I have archery hunted that unit for at least 10 years and last year was the worst. The elk numbers were down and I believe that it is because of all the cattle in the woods. I hunt near private property and the grass in the private area was very tall and green. But there were no cattle on the private property. I am going to look for another area to hunt this year. There are still elk numbers in that unit but talk to fish and game. Good luck!

Have hunted it in the past, and had pretty good success. Last year I hunted with three other guys for three solid days of walking...did not see an elk! I am going to hunt a new unit. Cody
