Default what paint for decoys?

I have painted some bluebill decoys before but it seems that the paint didn't do very well. I was thinking of buying an airbrush gun and painted a bunch of decoys up. What kind of paint should I use? Anybody have a certain type of paint that works well?

Thanks Gottafish!
The suggestion to use Krylon Fusion as a primer is right on.
Gotta get a good bite on the plastic!

2 dumb questions. First I have some old, mid '80's Carrylite mallards that I'd like to turn into Bluebills. How much of the old paint do I need to remove, & how do I do it? I tried a pressure washer last fall, but I was spending 20 minutes on each decoy....... Do I just need to be more patient?

And where do I find the flat colors in the Krylon Fusion. My local "membership store" only has glossy finishes.

I know, I know that's 4 questions, but.........I aren't that smart

And, while someone is at it, what, if anything, is wrong with glossy? Does glint make them look more like real feathers?

Not too long back I was looking for the same type of info. I came across a web site that the guys whent into detail on what and how to do it. I think they even sold a video on how to repaint decoys.

One tidbit I remember them saying was in order to protect the paint from wear, paint the decoys with Krylon satin clear coat. The satin is suposed to give the decoys that sheen of clean feathers and provide protection to the color cote. They then would just touch up the clear cote every year or as needed.

I will try and find the site.

I found the site.

Here is a link to the decoy clear cote idea.

http://www.takeem.com/duck_decoys/duck_decoy_tips1.php

They use Krylon 1311 clear matte finish

Wow...the only Carrylite dekes I have are a couple of dozen black Crows.

That's because IMHO (from viewing other's dekes) Carrylite can't/couldn't even get their own factory paint to stick!

I once thought to myself, "The guy who invents a paint that will stick to Carrylites is going to make a bundle of $$$!"

It's not the paint, but the plastic! It looks to me like Carrylite uses LDPE (milk jug plastic) for their decoys. It's durable stuff, but paint doesn't stick to it.

Maybe some of that primer might work?

I think the main problem is the plastisizer (animal fat based) that they use in their plastic.
