Default .17 Gun Choise

Just thought I would throw out a question about the 17. I have really been thinking about getting one for slaying sage rats and the occational nutria. Anyway I would prefer a semi-auto. As far as I know Remington is the only maker of a semi auto in the .17. Is ruger going to come out with one on the 10/22 frame. This would seem like a great set up to me? Anybody have a remington semi auto and what do you think about them? Accuracy, shootablity, ect. Any info would be great. Also what would be a good scope combo for this rifle(sage rats).

I noticed in Cabalas that green mountain has come out with a 17hmr barrel for the Ruger 10/22mags. I know someone who got one and talk about SWEET!!!

If I was to get one It would be the Marlin 17VH

I am going to buy a new england single shot with a 22inch bull barrel "to cheap to feed an auto". I ordered the scope its called a "sweet 17" made by BSA, 2to7 variable with yard markings on the elevation knob for the 17, so you I don't need to use kentucky windage out to 200yd. Ordered it from Sportsman Guide for $69.95.

NEF is a good, accurate, single shot gun for around $200. Semi-autos are for getting your jollies blasting milk jugs.

If remington does not hurry up and make a .17hmr in the new 504, I will have to add another Marlin to my collection (I really like my 881).....Ross

Are you totally set on a semi-auto? If not, I'd go with the Ruger in a bolt action. Bolts are generally more accurate and maybe cheaper in the long run as you probably wouldn't blow through as many shells as you would with a semi-auto. Those shells aren't cheap at about $10.00 for qty. 50.

I have a Marlin 917vs with the new trigger and a BSA Sweet 17 3-12 scope. I'm very impressed with the rifle, but the scope on the other hand has given me some grief. I have a friend with the Remington semi-auto and it donsn't seem to shoot near as well as the Marlin. He has had a number of shells jam. For the $ the Marlin is hard to beat

Damien,

Keep in mind the new 17 M2 will be out soon. Ammo out first and rifles this fall is the time line. Thompson Center will have a 17M2 semi. You may want to check out hornady's or cci's web site for info.... It will be hot. CCI will be making it for all as usual.
