Default Outboard position durring storage

Do you keep your outboard tilted up or down while storing your boat? What are the risks and advantages to either method?

Cheers!

Mine's partly up, on the transom saver. Risk in leaving it up is that rain could conceivably build up in the hub and might freeze, risk to being left down is that you'll forget and leave it that way when you pull out and rip the skeg off. I have always opted to leave it up and take my chances with the weather rather than risk a sure thing that I'll screw it up.

I was always told to leave them (4-strokes) down for storage. Might want to call a service department or look at the manual for your particular motor.

Haven't tore a skeg off yet

Mine I leave down. They're down to drain out anyway, flush if needed, run if needed and check the oil before the next trip. Just seems like the right thing to do. The exception would be if I know I'm using the boat again within a few days and the temps are above freezing. zip

Down for storage so all water & condensation can drain out.

I actually checked my 4 strk Yam owners manual. In one place it says "The outboard motor should be trailered and stored in the normal running position". In another place it shows the motor in normal running position and says "to prevent problems which can be caused by oil entering the cylinder from the sump keep the motor in the attitude shown when transporting and storing".

I store it with the motor down and trailer it with it tilted up. But, Yamaha says you should trailer it down but tilted up with a transom saver bar if there isnt enuff clearance.

Tilt up and down a couple times to get all the water out, and then leave down for storage. This leaves the motor in the position that it was designed to be at.

Yup, what Treegolfer said. I travel with them up, and when stored they're down and drained. If I'm going out in a couple of days I'll leave them up, just for convenience, but this time of year, I keep 'em down in the boat barn.
