Default Gray's Harbor

We are planning a family vacation to Westport, Wa the 3rd week of July and I will be taking the boat up. It will be our first trip to that area.

Any fishing advice for that time of year? What's the bar like, etc...?

THANKS in advance.

Keep in touch around that time of year. There will be a lot of peole fishing there every day that it's open. Last year was pretty good at that time weather and fishing wise.
Have you been out of Westport before? Try and hook up with some one for a ride if you can before you do it on your own if you have time.
Sounds like my kind of vacation....I hope that salmon fishing will be doing well by that date.

They got a great Coast Guard crew up there. They would a pretty good source for your bar questions.

A nice trick to know crosing the bar is to slide out along the north jetty. once you get outside of the jetty at a safe distance, turn north for three to four hundred yards. You will find a seam in the current where it will be a lot better ride out. Going straight out across the bar can put you in a sloppy ride for up to five miles. Of course if the water is flat, that's another story. When you get closer to going on the trip, pm me and I will let you know where we have been fishing. Usually have my boat moored on port side of dock 21 about third of the way out. 26' Striper,go buy the handle of My son on channel 71.

Spoiled Daddy,
Preperation and planning are always a large part of the equation.
The new WA regulation proclamtion is usually available the first part of May. Then we will have a better idea of the fisheries.

I'll agree with USCG Depot Bay that the men working at the West Port station are great people. The USCG station is located next to the boat ramp. I spent more than an hour asking them all kinds of questions about the nature of crossing the bar under different conditions; last year was my first time to cross the Westport 'bar'. Be advised that you'll likely to be dealing with fog immediately offshore that can be thick and dense in the morning, so you will need to be especially alert.. I'll be mooring my boat at Westport next summer too, and will answer to "Chrome Chaser" on 68. Bon Chance.
