Default is the salmonberry area a draw???

I was thinking of hunting this area for elk this year. I know it gets pounded pretty good the first few miles but what about back by the falls and beyond? I know it is about 7 miles back to the falls have any of you taken the walk beyond and done any good . I know there are millions of trails and elk up front.

There is no draw, but the Wilson has odd seasons. There is a rifle season that is one week long that starts either the second or third week of october. During this time the deer season is closed. The bag limit for the october season is 1 legal bull elk (spikes longer then the ears- and any bigger bull). Then the wilson unit is open during the general second season coast bull elk for a week in mid november. This season is spike only. I have hunted both. When I hunted the october season it was very dry and I never saw a bull, but I did walk up on a herd of cows. Last year my brother shot a spike during the second season. Back beyond the falls there are still good numbers of elk, and there has been lots of new logging to open it up.

You can access the river from salmonberry road and following the train tracks down. You will have to cross the river to get to the tracks. It's about five miles down to the Nehalem river from the crossing. There is not any access points below the crossing, so plan on a long pack. You can also access the tracks from beaverslide road a couple of miles upstream of the crossing. There are a fair number of elk rifle hunters that hunt this area. Some have built custom carts to run on the tracks .

Dislaimer: Railroad tracks are private property and dangerous to walk on( and probably against the law).

I always acces it from foss and go back. I am interested in rifle hunting back there But I agree it is a long way back and I can remeber all to well longs days of packing out Bear, Deer, pigs etc... But Now a days it seems if you dont get a great draw or really know an area the best way to find elk is to just shut up and walk farther then the last guy. thanks for all the in put.
