What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Hey everyone! I am just curious so see what ya'll are using for Elk and Deer, rifle wise. I am currenty using a Husqvarna 30/06 for both. It was my grandfather's gun that he left to me, and has done nothing but kill animals, it's a great shooter.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
people still use rifles for Elk? Go with a bow and you will never go back. When I did hunt with a rifle it was a Rem 700 BDL 30-06. Usually 150 grain or 180 gr bullets all topped off with a Leupold VariX-III 2.5X9 40MM.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Elk: 54 cal. Knight Inline Muzzeloader
Deer: Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag. 3-9x50mm Leupold.
(The Husqvarna is a rock-solid rifle, no frills, just comes out of the closet once a year and does what is asked, stick with the 30-06, learn its limitations, handload for accuracy, scope it properly, and most important shoot it alot. That is my opinion

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Savage 300WSM, last 2 seasons, and made first kill last season with a little whitetail buck. The 25 years prior to that a Remington 700 30-06. It never let me down and my son has used it the last 2 years. I began reloading a couple years ago, and having fun developing loads for both.

Buckleydux,
You're right on, the Husqvarna is a rock solid rifle. My dad reloads ammo for both my 30/06 and his 7MM Mag. 180 gain with Nosler Partitions.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
For Deer,Bear, and Elk I shoot a Browning Abolt medallion 300 Wsm, with a synethic stock ,and a stanless barrel, with no boss. I shoot a 180grain failsafe bullet. This setup cost a bunch, but Browning is the best there is! I love it.
Besides that i also use a Martin Pro series Jaguar Bow. it's got a tropy taker arrow rest ,and a montanta black gold site. it a great combo for the price that i got it for.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
I understand the "draw" (clever huh) of archery, but who wants to be in the woods fighting yellow jackets when there are 10,000+ chinook, 5000 Steelhead, and who knows how many coho, a day, going over bonnille that time of year
Elk - 50 cal Knight mk 85
Deer - Pre '64 m70 300 H & H or the same Model in '06 featherweight, when I get tired of luggin' the 300.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
This is my Elk and Bear gun, a Remington sendero sf 300 ultra mag with a 4.5-14x50 leupold scope.
Here is one of my deer guns it is my Remington model seven chambered in a 7mm08, with 120gr nosler ballistic tip with a leupold 3-9x40 scope. I use this when most of my shots will be under 250 yards.
This is my other Deer gun it is a Remington 700 with a Douglas supreme barrel. Chambered in a 280, with 140gr nosler ballistic tips. It has a 3.5-10 x 40 leupold scope. I use this gun when I hunt more open ground.
And this is my Deer/Elk gun when I hunt the battleground unit. It is a Thompson Omega .50 cal that I load 150grs of pyrodex pellets and a 250gr hornady sst sabot.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Fish Hawg, it is my understanding that we can not shoot those sst in washington. I had my muzzle loader checked by a gamie this year and he blew my sabbot out. I use the 310 grain knight sabbot, no problem there but i asked him if i could use the bullets that look like balistic tips and he said nope 100% lead only.

Browning syn./stainless A-bolt w/boss in .300 Win. Mag with a Leupold Var-X III 4.5-14x50.
Elk, deer, coyotes, they all have a sweet spot that you need to hit. This gun consistently finds it, even when the shooter tries to screw it up!!

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Big TULE, I talked to several game officers in Vancouver, and Olympia before I bought my Omega. They said I can use what ever bullets, powder, and primers I want in the battle ground unit (or any firearm restricted unit)I can also put a scope on it. If I have a modern firearm license, I can only hunt the battle ground unit during modern firearm season. They also said it makes no difference because I could also use my 12ga loaded with 5 copper plated slugs. The bad thing About the Omega is I can’t hunt muzzle loader season with it. It does not meet the regulations.
I do have the one of the captians name wrote down somw where......Ross

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Wreckless, you do make a good point, and there's been many times I've thought the same thing. Usually while starting an 11:00am stalk on a bedded Mule Deer. It's 87 deg. and warming and the tallest thing growing is sage that's thigh-high. No wait. It's a couple hours later when I've failed my stalk due to some bonehead move on my part and I find myself miles from camp and it's 97 deg. and I just took my last swig of water ( I carry a minimum of 2 qts always).

FH you are right... Sorry man was not trying to bust on ya... I hunt muzzle loader only now. I got tired of seeing 30-40 elk in a season. now we see 30-40 a day. Plus we have a longer season. And i can shoot a deer at the same time.

Model 760 .270 with Bushnell 3x9 3200 elite series scope. Have that rifles daddy (30.06) that I use occasionally. I also hunt with a CVA .50 Muzzleloader. Not the most expensive or most beautiful set up, but the deer and elk are still lying on the ground when it's over.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
DEER: Remington 700BDL chambered in .240
ELK/BEAR: Weatherby Vanguard Chambered in .300 WBY Mag
I don't reload my own rounds, so I stick with the Winchester ballistic tips for deer and Federal Premiums for ELK.
Does anyone have solid reasons why I should try other ammo? I started shoothing these and liked them, but I would be willing to try some others if there is better out there. I have tried Hornaday rounds for the 270. I liked them too, but I have not shot that many to form a solid opinion. Thanks!

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
Tree hugger huntn'? OOOOHHH, I get it!
Not me I like distance and bullet placement.
Used to use a 257 Roberts, that my dad gave me when I was 9. Shot my first buck that year with it. A really nice 4 point. I use a 260 for deer now. I don't hunt deer much anymore cause there is none left with all the Doe hunts they've had. :depressed:
For Elk, I hunt with Norma. Best rifle I have ever hunted with. 308 Norma Mag. Love to get out there and stretch her legs at about 500 yds. She's done well with the Bulls.
Happy Huntn'
So there ya Go!

Big Tule, What powder do you use in yours
I seen a guy on tv shoot a whitetail at 220 yards with the same setup I listed. The buck did not take a step. He said he was shooting 0.8" groups @100 yards with a scope

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
I bought a new pre-64 Mod 70 in 30.06 cal I think in 1962. Maybe it was 1961. I still use it today. I have killed elk, deer, antelope, and all kinds of smaller critters with it. At my age I doubt that I will change guns.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
i use pyrodex, i have found the best load to shoot out of my knight bighorn is 110 grains pushing a 310 grain bullet. It is deadly acurate for me to 150-175 yards. i say that because that is what i am comfortable shooting. I shot a 4x4 in coweeman this year 140 yards neck shot, it fell where it stood. well actually it slid down hill about 30 yards. I love my muzzle loader. we would see 30 elk in the rifle season if we were lucky. during muzzle loader we saw 40-50 a day. with less than half the people. I will never rifle hunt for elk again. Well in WA anyways.

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
I only hunt deer with a rifle in Idaho and lately I have been using a Browning A-Bolt 300WSM topped with a B&L 3200 Elite 3x9. Awesome flat shootin cartridge. Take that back--I hunt blacktails too when I can draw the bonus tag.
I have killed a ton of deer with my Remington .270 topped with a 3.5x10 Leupold though. Tawni also used it to lay the smack down on her first elk a couple of years ago.
I also bought a .260 from Fishin Magician and am wanting to slay something with it as well

Re: What's your Elk and Deer setup?
For me, choice of gun has more to do with where I am hunting than the species.
I have a Winchester 30-06 SS classic with a Leupold 4.5-14 X 40 mm that is good for open areas where shots over 100 yards are likely.
I also have a Marlin 45-70 guide gun with a ghost ring and Hi Viz fiber optic sight. I missed a couple of opportunities with the 30-06 because I took too long finding the critter in the scope. The Marlin is very quick on target and is plenty accurate out to 100 yards. Handloads can push a 325 grain hollow point at over 2000 fps.
Either one of these guns can be loaded for either elk or deer.
I also use the 30-06 with Hornady V-Max 105 gr ballistic tips at 3300 fps for varmints. Turns most small critters into a <font color="red"> red mist </font> and will turn a coyote inside out. I need to resight when I transition to and from this load.
I am going for southwest black bear next month and I will use the 30-06 with 180 grain bonded bear claw (Same for last years elk)
