No question the biggest bulls on public land are in the Wenaha Unit. Rifle or bow..... dont waste them do your home work and scout and find the most knowlegeable person you can about that unit. Scout, scout, scout. I'm jealous !!!!! I only have 4.

Re: 7 points for elk where would you go?
You could hunt this year in either Millcreek Watershead or Mt Emily with only 7 pts. Wenaha or Walla Walla would take 8 to 10 pts this year for a chance.

Re: 7 points for elk where would you go?
Don't waste your time in Mt. Emily. If I was you and I'm not, I would just keep on trying for Wenaha. If you can't wait Walla Walla is right next door. I've spent the last two years in Mt. Emily and it has been rather disappointing, and I'm a hunter. A real hunter. There are plenty of opps out there for a great bull on public land if you do your homework. Keyword there is HOMEWORK, ie.. SCOUTING! Focus & be patient on the big picture. Really there are big bulls everywhere, you just gotta find'em. I've been fortunate I guess.

Re: 7 points for elk where would you go?
I dont think youll draw the Wenaha hunt with only 7 points, but you can always get lucky. The Walla Walla unit is right next door and Im pretty sure you could draw it with 7 but I heard it is a pretty tough hunt. Starkey has as many elk as anywhere in the state and if you know the area there is a good chance at a nice bull. Imnaha has a nice big herd of elk, and Ive seen lots of big bulls in the Chesnimus unit. I have a freind that bow hunts the keating unit every year and he always brings home a nice bull.

Re: 7 points for elk where would you go?
Due they count the points as 7 or 8 I went to the web site and it says I have 7 elk 6 deer and 6 antalope so dose that mean I'll have that many when it comes time to draw or will they add one point to them. I have never hunted elk with a rifle and I have been bow hunting since about 12 years old, now Im 35 and I think id like to try the easy way. I want a 6x6 or better. I have shot about 14 elk but I have yet to break the 5x5 barrier

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">The ODFW updates the points at the end of January so if those are the points you are showing right now then that is what you have. 6 Points for Deer! You are 1 year away from being able to hunt the "Trout Creek Mountian" hunt. I have always wanted to do that hunt. With 7 Elk points I would do the Walla Walla archery hunt. 26% success and of that 71% are 6x6 or better!!

Re: 7 points for elk where would you go?
Mill Creek Watershed is an interesting hunt for us in Oregon.
I've drawn this tag, we saw numerous branch bulls before season. Thursday night, we had 60+ mph gusts, lots of blow-downs, etc. Because the Oregon side is mostly the high-ridge side, and the Washington side is the main part of the big watershed valley...well, the majority of the elk bugged out and went down into the WA side. The 4th day of the season, we sat on a turn-out in the road around the watershed and watched 4 branch bulls feeding across open hillsides...on the WASHINGTON side!! The season was open at the same time on that side, but it's such a larger area, and they have the same amount of tags as Oregon.
My wife has 6 points, and has been putting in for this hunt. Remember:
1. ONLY the tagholder can enter the unit while hunting. A second person per tag holder may enter when packing out an animal.
2. You may not enter the watershed except during daylight hours, and ONLY during season (no scouting)
It's a tough hunt by yourself...but you can probably hook up with another loner when you get there if you want, maybe just for a buddy system so someone else has an idea where you'll be.
There used to be regular patrols on the horse trails in the watershed, it was easy to utilize these for getting up and down the mountain. They got rid of these patrols a few years back. The trails have started to grow over and get filled with blowdown now...remember, you can't be in there before season to open them up!!
I was told by the person down at the guard station that there's really no reason for the restrictions on the watershed any more. They have a new high-tech filtering system. There's been talk about getting rid of this hunt, and just rolling in into the main Walla Walla hunt.
Remember, if you really want to hunt this year, but everyone tells you to hold out for Wenaha....the MC Watershed buts up against the backside of Wenaha...you're hunting whats likely the same genetic area of elk.
My .02
