Default Hunting/Scouting Reports Week 3/6 - 3/12

Well most all of the big game seasons are over or will be in a week or so. So lets hear some scouting reports.

Scouting will begin when the grouse start to drum.

Scouting? What do you mean, scouting? It's still hunting season for some of us!

Just kidding, guys, but I just got back from what has to be the last elk hunt of the season.

I have a friend who is a quadriplegic, and thanks to a rancher with a GOOD HEART, my buddy got a tag for an elk on his ranch. He took this one with a 140 yard lung shot which dropped it in about 15 steps. My pal is an extradordinary shot who not only loads his own ammo, but competes in benchrest matches up and down the valley. When I say he knows how to steer a rifle, you can believe me. He shot this one on the run with a 338/06 and a 250gr Hornady Interbond.

The herd had spooked, but not yet hit warp speed and this one was with a group of three that were trailing the main bunch. Make no mistake though, they were moving right along and it was a good shot in anybody's book.

We went out the next day (while the elk was cooling out) and laid waste to a hundred or so sage rats. He was using a .222 and I was working with my .17HMR. Did I mention that he's a really, really good shot?

Pretty fun weekend, but now I've got elk to cut up. The labor of love.

That sounds like a great time. Elk, rats friends. What more could a guy ask for?
Maybe for you to not let the elk see your mug and start them to running.

I figured that since you hadn't posted, you were out doing something fun.

That cow is the hairiest elk I've seen  . Are you sure that isn't a sasquatch?
