Anyone ever hunted the Hart MT archery buck hunt, if so what was it like and how was the success?

They need to cut the tag numbers in half so you don't have every Tom Dick and Harry busting in on your stalk.

I had a Hart Mtn tag in 1988. I had a blast! There were lots of big bucks, numerous stalks each day. Only problem I had was undershooting every time I got close. I was used to hunting Blacktails in brush and timber, but the combination of wide open spaces and larger deer completely threw my depth perception out the door. The bucks looked a whole lot closer then they actually were.

I was shooting a recurve without sights, and no range finder.

The country I was hunting is awesome! I saw several nice rams, numerous pronghorn bucks, and more bucks then you can imagine.

In 1992 there was a BIG winterkill and nearly wiped out the mule deer summer on Hart Mtn. It's recovered some, but not completely. Norm Johnson of Blacktail Bows www.blacktailbows.com sent me photos of two nice bucks he and his buddy killed last year.

I haven't applied for that tag since the winterkill, but it might be fun to go again. Good luck!

I met that guy when he first started out!

I want to say that he is related to a buddy of mine up here in Hillsboro. I dont even shoot a recurve and I will say he makes an awesome looking bow!

I just wish that the hunt could be later so that you would be killing hard horned bucks. I've killed a few velvet Blacktails and personally don't care to kill another animal in the velvet. I did everything I could to preserve a nice 4 points antlers but they ended up being eaten up by moths.

I agree with Crayfin on Norms bows. Even though I don't shoot a traditional bow they sure are pretty. Actually I bought my first bow from Norm but it was a Martin Lynx Magnum he was giving up to shoot a Jim Brackenbury recurve. I can see why the Martin soured him on compounds.
