That boat "tank" would do just fine in the columbia.

Re: New duck boat
My first impression was "over-kill".
I've hunted the Cheasapeake Bay tributaries, the Atlantic Barrier Islands, Oregon bays, boatable Arkansas flooded timber, and the White, Cache, Arkansas and Columbia Rivers and I can't think where a boat that big would be better than a smaller TDB, or even a Broadbill. Unless you plan on shooting sea ducks w/large numbers of people, on the North Atlantic, or divers on the Great Lakes I'd go with something smaller.
It's size and weight in tidal marshes would make it a nuisance. Just my opinion!

Re: New duck boat
I'd ask how shallow of water it can get into beforehand.
For bay or lower C.R. I'm sure it'd be fine.
But for flooded back water I'd question it.
My Tracker can be pulled into flooded grass <1ft deep and at 17.5ft it's "just big enough".
A used 18ft sled is hard to beat....and a LOT cheaper. And a sled is dual purpose.
But that thing sure would be roomy for 3 guys!

Re: New duck boat
Jeff Coats uses this boat to guide sea duck hunting on the Chesapeake Bay. He routinely has 5 guys, 1 dog, and gear. This is a seriously large boat that can handle moderate sea conditions. I'd keep that in mind. It sure is a nice boat, but there's a lot of it.

Re: New duck boat
From the looks of the bow, I would think that boat would have a tendency to stick the big rollers of the Columbia. However, if the boat rides nose up, it shouldn't be to much of a problem.

Re: New duck boat
I am torn right now, too. Have been looking into the 21 foot Bankes but can't pull the trigger. Could somebody just invent a boat that is huge and heavy with a raised bow so you could get out anywhere, anytime, but could then shrink and lighten up and lower the bow and overall profile for stealth hunting???? what?!???? Re: New duck boat
How about this one Dave?
Available as a 18' by 66" wide floor, vee bow true flat bottom. Anyone can claim what they want, but the most surface area in the water makes the boat float higher.
I think a buddy of mine is getting one with a prop and a tunnel hull.
How deep does that look like it's sitting in the water?
Boat weight 1100 lbs.
Be a heckuva tide water boat. And ROOMY.

Re: New duck boat
That torpedo looking nose looks bad and all, but what is the point? I can't think of a situation where having the downward sweep on the nose cone would be an advantage. Why wouldn't you sweep the thing up as high as the rest of the boat? Am I missing something?

Re: New duck boat
i believe that the downward sweep in the front lowers the visable profile for camo purposes. when grassed up it looks more like an island.
GRB - nice looking boat, but that flat bottom looks to be one helluva rough ride on the big rollers on the lower river IMHO. great shallow/flat water boat though. very nice indeed.

Re: New duck boat
GRB,
I have the same boat (except a snub nose in front)
I have sold it for the New boat (up in this thread), because it was really sketchy in bad chop and in the standing rollers that come with current and tide rip on the lower river.
It was easy to haul things in, and I liked the "Open floorplan", but i was not able to hunt out of it, nor could I conceal it from Directly above\.
This ought to work out better for me.

Re: New duck boat
duckboy - you've got to let me know how that thing rides out of aldrich in the rough stuff..you know what i mean, those big rollers as you cross that open water heading into the launch. my buddy's 18 footer (also a wiiide flat bottom style) seems a little (or maybe alot) outclassed on those days when the wind/tide kick up the big stuff on the open river out near the channel. the 21 footer seems ideal, but i would like to get away with a smaller one if i can. if need be, i'll suffer the extra size just for those 3 days a year that i seriously contemplate camping out until the weather/water settles down.

Re: New duck boat
It is the flat bottom up front that kills you out there, the V in the front of this will make a huge difference in the current and chop and rollers, I am wondering if I should get the bottom V a at a slighter angle? Than the boat in the photo?
It should be aok in any event, since it will be a dockbreaker, .190 guage aluminum all the way!
If i hit anything, It will be like a freight train hitting a schoolbus.

Re: New duck boat
yeah, it was mentioned earlier that it looked like that might "torpedo" the rollers out there. from the pics i tend to agree with that. i'd have to see it person though to really know. as for the "V" angle, it looks (again from the pic) that the "V" eases out pretty quick to the flatter bottom. probably a good wave breaker. i like it..i'd stick with it. you might give up an inch or two in draft, but waaaaay make up for it in ride.

Swamp puppy,
I stated upbove that the bow looks like it would stick a wave. I was speaking about the banks. Duckboys ride to me has a better bow design for lift. The round blunt nose will ride up and over the rollers much easier than the banks. This will be inportant when you hit the big rollers. In modererate chop the banks will excell.
Duckboy, a slight "V" will not draft that much more than a true flat bottom. Depending on the motor jet/prop will be a deciding factor wether you want a slight "v" or need one for performance reason. Either way I would not go more than 6 degrees. The new will be a cadalac compared to the flatty.

Re: New duck boat
boy, I hope so.
I just about lost all my fillings and my buddies have bruised kidneys from the ride of the old Stealthbomber.
I am going to put a Merc 60 HP 4 Stroke on a Hydraulic Jack Plate for this boat.
Should push me along at a sane speed.

Duckboy,
You're trading the stealthbomber in for the Abrams! That thing looks like a freakin' tank.
Let us know how it works out.

Re: New duck boat
Looking at Gottafish's dream boat and the one Duckboy is having built and the TDB's...they all have one thing in common. And that is they have a top shell with a large shooting hole. Other than that they are basically a boat with a canopy shell on top, except for Duckboys that one is all welded Alum. But the end result is still the same.
So has anyone ever tried to glass a top for a std sled??
I've been thinking about doing just that after I saw my first TDB. Afterall they are just basically a std boat hull with a top on'em. My duck boat is my Bass boat, an old Bass Tracker 17.5ft. Could a fella just glass a canopy shell top for it that can be removed after waterfowl season?? I think this canopy design has several advantages: concealment, rough water deck, keeps folks & gear from falling out and keeps the rain off most of the gear. A top cap for the shooting hole and the security goes up.
Glassing isn't hard, but making the mold might be tricky. Would a plywood mold do it??
Just thinking out loud,
Hunt'nFish

Re: New duck boat
That's an interesting idea Hunt'nFish. You might be able to stich and glue the canopy from thin plywood, then skin the whole thing with a layer of fiberglass. That might get you more rigidity with lighter weight than all glass, and would probably be easier to build than a mold.
