Default Where to Elk Hunt

I just started hunting elk a few years back and have only hunted eastern oregon once. That was in south sumpter, no luck. After bow hunting on the coast last year, I would like to take my rifle back to eastern oregon again. I was wondering what units are people's favorites with 1 point. I would prefer a bull or hair tag. Any ideas? What's the story with Lookout Mt, any good?

Cow only tag. And with only one point, that might be your best bet, unless you want to get one of the spike only, over the counter tags. If you are willing to hunt a cow only tag, I would recommend the flagtail hunt in the Murderers creek unit.

You don't have much chance at the better Bull or hair tag hunts, unless you know a property owner over there who has L.O.P. tags.

I figured that I didn't have much of a chance at a decent bull or hair tag, but I thought that I would throw the question out there anyways. Maybe my question should have been whether to apply for a cow tag with my one point or apply for a bull tag and most likely be left with two points next year?

If you don't know Lookout Mt. I wouldn't start trying to learn it now. It is a difficult hunt for the elk that are in there. It will cost you a couple of points and many trips scouting to get a bull there. Lots of private land and the bulls (and bucks for that matter) know where the fence is. Pick one of the hunts in the northeast that has a lot of tags and public land and go for it. You will learn more about hunting elk and give you a feel for hunting over east. Or, pick a late cow hunt, and go for it in the snow. Snow can really be a blessing.

Good luck,

Mark I'm sitting to far from my beer. It's happy hour!!!

You might not want to give up bow hunting yet.I used to bowhunt the south coast area before we found a good spot over east, been hunting east last 15 yrs.In my opion its getting harder to find good spots like ther used to be. Also fish/game hasnt made archers choose east or west yet.... but they will(more money).Nicer weather too no fog, snow or rain usualy. So my 2cents worth you might want to enjoy archery while you still can,its hard to beat one of those big rosie bulls screaming at ya.
