A little clarification.
We had a little discussion yesterday at the coyote clinic about the use of electronic callers. Seems I was wrong (along with the rest of the group), take a look at page 9, right hand column (miscellaneous), second guestion. I take that as you can use an electronic caller for everything except upland game birds and waterfowl.
What's your feeling on that? I think I already know the answer for most of you bowhunters.

True, and you don't have to cook 'em since they're probably already baked or fried.
Now what was thread about originally?

Re: A little clarification.
Yeah, what was it we were talking about---before we went sideways? Do they concider turkeys, upland game birds?
Anyways, this really surprised me, yesterday we all thought about all you could use a electronic caller for was predators, guess not.

Re: A little clarification.
Turkeys don't require an upland game bird stamp, however. I think that makes them not an upland game bird. It seems like this was a question in one of the recent quizzes from Oregon Hunter magazine.
There's a lot of confusion about things like baiting, electronic callers, electronic decoys. It seems strange that you can use bait and electronic calls to hunt elk, but you can't use a self-powered motion decoy. I'm not really sure how they decide which one is cool and which one isn't, but there you have it.

Re: A little clarification.
I agree, we also went over that regulations yesterday and Skein pointed out (if I can keep it straight) that you can not use a light for coyotes on public land, but you can for coon, possum and bobcats. Coyotes are ok to spotlight on private land if you are the landowners agent. Does the 500 foot rule apply on private ground? Where's my lawyer??
Whats the logic? I think it may be time to do a review on some of these regulations and try to cut out some of the confusion.

Re: A little clarification.
Rank I don't think it's pratical in most elk calling situations I prefer the reed. There will be some one who will try it I am sure. We are moving more with elk and with coyotes your trying to being them into you where you are in elk hunting I would constatly be running to grab the box to move on.

Re: A little clarification.
Hey Rank,
Maybe the regulations were concerned about people shooting domestic dogs at night? Even as a cat owner I know that a domestic cat out and about is not following anyones orders. A dog could be someones lost hunting hound on a bobcat chase or trying to save Timmy From The Well.
I have a copy of Oregons Hunting Regulation Booklet from 1918 to 1919 and it's 4 pages total. I wonder if there is some middle ground between that and todays regulations.
As for electronic calls I don't think I'll bother trying one for coyotes until those $400 models are sold at what they are really worth. Or I'll buy a used on in 5 years. They look fantastic but I know they are just having a temperary high price while they are the latest hot item. I would rather invest in 16 old Weems mouth calls as a collector item. To fork out $400 for a made in China gizmo that would cost $8 a piece to produce a million of???

Re: A little clarification.
Yeah, I know, but you will be missing out on 5 years of fun! Hey, its only money, you can't take it with you. This from a guy that only has one hunting rifle!
The dog thing might be a reason, but then again, I would hope most guys would see a difference between a hound dog and a coyote. Just like skein said in his class, just because you see eyes doesn't mean you can shoot. It may be a deer.

Re: A little clarification.
Weems spelling may be off a little is a old coyote call that Skein told me where to get it. We actaully used it to call in a number of deer some small bucks and a lot of does. I made some good money on side bets when we were bored calling in deer. Speaking of deer calls I had a old Nissan Pickup that had a door dinger that worked good on deer you could open the door and step into the woods or sage and deer would come in to check it out I mean to like 20 yards from the truck it was fun. Best truck I ever had I should have kept it even if we had to tow it around for a deer caller
