Do you want them to be used over and over -- like with a pointer? Or do you want 'disposable' (chewable) for a retriever?

Homers are good for the former ------barn or freeway pigeons good for the latter..

Your local fish and wildlife office may have a list of folks licensed to sell birds. When I was training a pointer, I got ahold of a guy through that route and bought quail from him.

The livestock auction, in Woodburn, has a samll animal auction the same day (I think that it is Wed.). You will find all types of birds there. That is where I go, when I'm training a new dog.

When they auction off a coup of birds, the winner will often only take a couple of birds and then they will re-auction the rest which will be for less money.

No regulations on Pigeons. This is the toughest time of year to find them.

I built a simple pigeon trap, with swinging one way doors, I found a trap on line and took the dimensions, and such and built out of 1x1 wood frame, got some small mesh chicken wire to skin it, then I took some 1/2" all thread and bent welding rod around it with about 6" hanging straight down, they were heavy enough to fall back after the bird walked through, got myself some pigeon feed from the feed store, and the rest was setting it on top of a building. I would get 10-12 pigeons every couple of days, until the day I showed up with a very angry hawk, and three pigeon skeletons inside, needless to say I let the hawk go and had to move the trap cause the hawks were there everyday, which meant no more pigeons. its a some practice but it was very inexpensive to build and kinda fun my boy enjoyed as well. any questions just ask.
