Default Shed Hunting With Andrew

Went out today with my five year old son looking for sheds in the high cascades in a unit that I got my late season buck in, but I didn't find any. I was reserved at first about taking him out in the steep terrain but all in all he was a champ. This is his second time hiking, and no tears this time. His legs get tired though, an the brush is waste deep. I just keep reasuring him that he is doing great and that I am proud of him for being tough. He is really into getting strong like dad. What we did find was my area full of elk. This time of the year they are always down in the timber in this area. It's just below snow line. I bet that I could go there everyday and see elk. Today, I saw a rag horn and I think a cow.I think he saw them but I am not sure. When I put the bino's up to his face he looks all over. I really want him to see an elk in the woods. When he was a baby I used to pack him around in a backpack carrier while scouting/hunting. In fact I took him up on top of Echo Basin when he was just a year old. I can't wait for bow season I think about it everyday. Anyone else getting out with thier kid? Take them along they need it too.

High Cascade? What elevation were you at? How much snow was on the ground?

Good to see you getting the kid started early. As far as shed hunting goes, well you saw a raghorn, I assume he was still wearing them?

That is so awesome!
My wife and I are expecting, and I cannot wait to share the outdoors with our child (girl or boy)!

Ive had my son out since he was off the milk jug. He loved going up in the woods, he is 10 now and still loves it. Just know not to burn him out early you dont want to mess up a good thing by pushing him too hard. A little trick I used to do was let him point out the deer, elk rubs. How old are these tracks? What kind of poop is this? You will be amazed how happy a kid is when they get to tell the old man somthing.OH one more thing,,,make sure he finds the first shed.

Hey guys, how about the animals? Right now the critters are at the lowest point in their nutrition cycle. The winter isn't quite over, new feed hasn't appeared and the animals are weak and stressed. The last thing they need are a lot of people combing the woods looking for horns while they're trying to survive. I know there's a lot of competition for horns, but if everyone stays away from the animals for another month or 6 weeks it would be much better for them!
