Garmin gpsmap 76S
I just ordered my first GPS will be here in a couple of day's. I went with the Garmin gpsmap 76S I'm hoping I made the right decision. Is there anyone out there that wants to help me learn how to use it when it arrives? Also any input on what maps I should get for GPS. Thank you in advance.

Re: Garmin gpsmap 76S
Good choice, and piece of cake to use in my opinion.

Re: Garmin gpsmap 76S
I just recieved mine Friday, I ordered the DVD to help me to get up to speed. It seems real easy to use, just need to use it and get to know it better.
A friend has the National Geographic topo for Oregon and likes it but I don't know enough about them so I can't recommend one. From what I understand the only topo you can load into the gps is Garmin's, but you can download your gps data into the other vendors maps, add info and print custom maps with your waypoints and features marked etc.
I wasn't particularly jazzed by the sensors but I wanted the extra memory for more maps.
Have fun, try the UTM coordinate system if you haven't yet, it's alot more accurate.

Re: Garmin gpsmap 76S
I have had mine for 2 years and have the Blue Charts/Roads & Recreation/Waterways & Lights SW loaded on it and it is awesome...
It does take some time to learn to use but if you take your time and read the owners manual it should be easy for you...
The tide tables & the Blue Charts are the best features I have on it... The Blue Charts will keep you in the channel on the columbia and has depth soundings and all pertinent buoy information...
Best of luck ...and hope you like it because I honostly do love mine...

Re: Garmin gpsmap 76S
Had a Garmin map 76 ' and just upgraded to the maps 76S, It is easy to use , I have the garmin roads & recreation CD and the Topo CD's. Good unit. Make a copy of your map CD's for normal use and keep the originals as back up, Cause at about $100.00 each for the r/r and the topo cd's you don't want to replace the originals. I use mine in my truck and on my boat and for hunting. Can't leave home with out it. Start reading the book and start pushing buttons

Re: Garmin gpsmap 76S
For you guys that want to upgrade: the color version is due out this spring. I just bought the 76S for $310, I found it a little cheaper elsewhere but wanted some extras and this place had everything I wanted.
