Default Salty Dog Assistance Needed

When it comes to seeking advice, there is no better information than that provided by the Dogs. I point out the excellent advice given to Id P on the convention issue. Here is my problem! My wife and I are going to be building a house in Rockaway Beach and I would like a new boat when we move to the coast. (I have 5 footitis) We went to the boat show and were looking at the 29' Striper when she says " if you want it, buy it". I had promised her I wouldn't buy a new boat until we are moved into the new house. The questions is should I listen to the little guy on my right shoulder that says "pull the trigger before she regains her senses", or the little guy on my left shoulder that is yelling into my ear " you made a promise and a real man keeps his promise".
I know you Dogs would never lead a fellow Dog astray, so I beg of you, "GIVE ME GUIDANCE"

George: It's sounds like the health issues are behind you and the Boss. I'm of the opinion that you can buy the boat now and "break it in" during the house construction. Yeah, it's sort of a compromise, but it will keep both those guys on your shoulders happy. Need some ned "construction sneakers"? See you at the convention, buddy.

Next years model will be 5 feet longer and by far better, BUT, if you get the boat now you can size your shop appropriately . I have been one to live for today because we never know for certain what tomorrow will bring. You likely have a better understanding of that than most. Your wife condeeding that you can get the boat now reflects that you satasfied the "spirit" of the promise. My advice would be to do what is going to give you the best quality of life over the next 18 months.
One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given about making difficult decisions was to write the question on a legal pad then draw a line down the center of the pad. On one side start writing all the reasons to do it, on the other write down all the reasons not to do it. Tally the list and everything i clear. Last year I used one of these papers to clean up the carking station after a Tuna trip .

Make sure it's the one you want, and buy it! You'll most likely get a better price because of the show, and it's obvious the Boss is okay with it.

Yes, real men live up to their promises, and your wife knows you well enough by now to know you will build that house. Besides, you're not going to be the one building it are you? With your back? No, no, you're just going to supervise and make sure it's done right. You can do that on the days the ocean is too rough.

The guys on your shoulder that you really have to watch out for are the ones saying, "Radar, twin antennas, GPS, live bait, etc...."

Post a pic! And congrats!!!!

Hey, can I introduce your wife to mine? Let's all have dinner together  !!

Regarding the buying of a boat, some folks are more analytical than others. You got some guys who....buy a new boat every 1 - 2 years (i.e. MyLimit) and you have others who make up a complex spreadsheet of all the wants & needs, and compare different boats against those wants & needs (i.e. Andiamo ).

So I think you need to decide where you fit into that....analysis process, and then follow it. Before even discussing brands of boats, size, etc. Unless of course your decision process is "immediate impulse buy", then you can take your wife up on the offer and sign a PO at the boat show.

Good luck, and have some fun doing it.

Sunny, we just figured that we will handle the health issues as best we can.

Ray, I don't want to make a darn list, it might not work in my favor!

Rod, what are you talking about! You change boats more often than I change socks. Thats not a bad thing, just a statement. No wonder my feet smell.

Jim, She didn't even flinch when I said the electronics would run about 10 large. She must have some plans for the house that I haven't seen yet.

George- I have ridden in your boat and enjoyed the ride (thanks again for the halibut trip) A 29' striper would be like comparing a pickup to a caddilac, congrats on the descision!

as far as when, I often have to wait until my wife says "yeah, go get it" and have a list of all the features I want by the time she gets there. If you know exactly what you want, AND you can still fulfull your promise to her without causing too large a change in quality of life...I say go for it. she is a great lady and I know she wants to keep you happy ( I could see it in her eyes). If you know you can do both, why wait?

TV,

Looks like you've got a great wife!

I remember you had mentioned your health issues awhike back, have you considered a cat fishing boat? Such as a Glacier bay? The reason I mentioned this is because it sounds like a cat would provide a smoother ride. Have seen 2 striper 29's @ South Beach and they are indeed pretty boats!

Another boat in that range is the 28-9 Luhrs fly bridge. Check it out.

Again before you pull a 100k decision. Go out for a test ride.

Good luck!

I am not sure the striper would be my choice, it's a nice boat, but in that price range, there are many choices. If that is the one you want, I think you are clear to buy it.

She very clearly let you out of your previous commitment not to buy a boat before the house is built. Pull the trigger!

If you saw it at the Seattle boat show then you talked to the guys from Cope-McPhetres. Make sure, and I repeat do not buy it from them. I got my striper from them and you will only be sorry. The boat is great and that 29' is beautiful. I believe there is a place in Portland that sells them and I have heard good things about them so get it there. Avoid Cope-McPhetres at all costs. If you research back to last year on my posts then you can see what I had to deal with. David Putnam

George I think your wife must be a real gem. Good for you. I would be tempted to pull the trigger but I think I would first ask her what she is up to. Meaning why did she change her mind. Legit question and the answer might be kinda fun to hear.

Anyways those big stripers are really nice and I would say go for it if it is what you want. As you have read I wanted to pull the trigger on a 26' Glacier Bay but the wife said I needed to wait until my truck and her van were paid off. Double payments are already being sent in...he he he...

How long of a wait are you looking at before you can take delivery on one? Would yours be custome built or you getting one that is already done?

Good luck with your adventure and the house building. That is enough to keep your plate full.

Here is the link for the 28 Luhrs. I read in Pac Sport Fishing mag, you can walk out the door, less than 100k with one of these.

Also check out www.davisboats.com Ive heard nothing but good things about the 25' Rock harbor.

I agree with Tracker. Got smart and walked away from Cope Mcphetres before I bought and stil felt like they lifted my wallet without me feeling it. THere's a decent Striper dealer in Portland on Hayden Island. Talked with the guy several times. Seemed easy enough. Bought a 26' Striper from Camano Marine last year. They are great people to deal with. Went up to look, went on test run same day. My wife asked if I liked it. Said uh-huh. She said Happy Birthday. Gotta love a good woman.

Just make sure this is the boat you really want. Wouldn't want to blow the "free pass" on the "wrong" boat. If this is your dream boat them by all means go for it.

I may be wrong, but you might be doing the whole thing backwards.

If you plan on occasionally hauling the boat out of the water, you should...

1. buy the boat, and then
2. build your boat storage and workshop, THEN
3. build the house on the remaining property.

This plan has lots of obvious advantages, not the least of which is that you will have a nice cozy place to sleep (your new boat). BTW, will your new boat have a Dog House, or will you build one in the boat shed?

Guys, thanks for all your input. I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I have loaded the gun and cocked the hammer. If you don't hear a bang then you know I have decided to wait or the boss came to her senses. If you hear a bang, then a 24 foot Duckworth is for sale.

TV,

It only takes a single "if you want it, buy it" to override all past "I wouldn't buy a new boat until we are moved into the new house" promises.

But don't be out on that boat forgetting about your new house obligations

Good Luck

It is a 2901 with the Alaska pack, Twin 250 Yamahas, 5Kw gen set, Raymarine C-120 monitor, 4kw Radome, Auto pilot, GP
S, ICOM M422 VHF. It has a 38 gallon live bait tank so now I need a place to buy live bait in Garibaldi. I don't have a name yet, that may be the subject of another post.

Thanks guys. I asked the wife if she wanted to go to the Auto Show and I got a resonding NO. I think she knows me too well. I will not pick up the new boat for about 2 months. I don't really want to be running around in the river right now anyway. There is too much garbage in the river. When the river drops and the garbage is gone I will start the learning process of piloting a twin engine boat. Judy and I are real happy about the purchase. You know the saying, the two happiest days for a boat owner are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. We look forward to moving to Rockaway Beach and enjoying the coastal lifestyle.

Get the boat and moor it at the Big Tuna Marine! When we were building the house at Barview, it was a bit old when we would go down and work all the time with no play. Mix play in and it will make the experience much better. ... That is if you have self control ;-)

Congratulations George! I got in a little late on the recommendations, but you did pretty much what I would have recommended. I gave my wife 3 chances to say no to my boat (worth enough to be a small second house), and she said "buy it" three times. It feels good, now three years later (after good times and repairs) knowing it was a team decision!
