Default Shocking on TV

Now I must of been raised by the old school, I don't watch to much TV as someone has to work.
Last night we sat down for dinner, the boob tub was on, anyway a commercial came on, I here what shock me, some thing about going wild, girl naked, college, I looked up at the tub and shut it off, I asked my wife what is this world coming to, I am glade my kids are on there own, and not in college, and who "OK's this to be shown on TV at dinner time????

What really gets me is how some of the programming sublimely
conveys the message that some of the really sick, wierd stuff you see on there is normal. It has a desensitizing effect on Moral, ethical issues you and I have.

They call that entertainment.

That Commercial you are referring to is a great example.

It's funny ! As soon as it pops up I switch channels.

I like the history Channel and some other programming but for the most part I'd shoot my TV if it were up to me.

I was watching a CSI rerun on USA network at 7 and saw the same commercial. I also thought it was inappropriate for that hour. Usually they dont come on till late at night. I am sure quite a few young kids got a eyefull. They do have parts blurred out. But the rest of it is still their. I am hoping they made a mistake.

Yeah its not very cool for it to be on tv at that hour but the truth is that kind of stuff is all over its almost imposable to stop a kid from seeing it.

keep in mind that if you have Dish you are often watching the east coast feed... a LOT of the shows I see in the local TV listing in the Boregonian are actuall on 3 hours earlier than listed... since it is an east coast feed... so your 7pm ad on USA might well have been a 10pm ad for the target time zone.

I turned my TV off almost 10 years ago. Now I wonder how I ever had the time to watch it.

My criteria for watching TV is this:

I will watch any program you suggest until they insult my intelligence or kill somebody.

Doesn't leave much, does it.

Kill your TV.

Those are cable channels and you have to pay for them. So the content is only restricted by the company. On the over the air channels the FCC can restrict content but not really. iff you read the law it's really up to the community to define it's standard. If you unplugged your cable you would not see a GGW commercial again. But you will see in prime time on an over the air station while watching age appropratie content for kids under 12 on sunday night an add for the show Las Vegas. A sexy woman gives a look to a guy and tells him " I am not wearing any panties". Whats up with that?

I take even further.
I believe that the violence that WE ALL are exposed to is HORRIBLE for us and we are BOMBARDED WITH EXTREME VIOLENCE CONSTANTLY!!SEX TOO!
I see people of all backgrounds taking their kids to movies that even to me are reprehensible and shouldn't be vied by anyone IMO.
It most DEFINITELY de-sensitizes us!
It caters to the lowest common denominator in humans and it will get worse because 90% of us want it, watch it, support it, and don't ever complain about it!
I, we, don't like it, support it or watch it and we do as much outside activities as possible to avoid the #### TV (except for some PBS) and rarely attend theaters.
No, we aren't bored at all and in fact it is spiritually fulfilling and our family are thick as thieves.

Hey Jeremy - real funny, NOT! You might find a few of us on Ifish that have daughters in public school in Oregon. We dads tend to be quite protective, and what you just said was very offensive. Sure that you didn't mean it that way, but....... think about it.

I've got one acronym for ya': TiVo.

I work swing shift, TiVo records all the shows I like to watch and I get to fast forward through all commercials.

Now, if they had RaVo for the Radio .....I cant stand Steve and all his credit problems.....

Wow, way to take a topic on TV and turn it into a political discussion of four of the hottest topics seen on ifish 1) abortion, 2) assisted suicide, 3) god and 4) medical marijuana.

That was some right turn.

Wow Pete, I don't think I've ever seen that spelled out before. Cool.

Now, back on topic. My feeling has always been if you don't like it, turn the channel. For an English speaking nation we tend to be quite prudish.

You can always turn off the TV if you don't want to watch the content of the programming.

Those commercials are no worse than the bombardment of nothing but bad news from the majority of news stations. It seems like they have decided to only find the bad news.

I would rather watch that commercial than turn to the local news and hear:

Stabbing in Portland
Assault in Salem
Double Homicide in Beaverton
Car Jacking in Aloha
Etc...

Story after story of death and despair.

I only watch the local news for weather anymore. Or early morning on channel 12 to check the traffic. I find it to be too negative. Far more offensive than that commercial.

Then what about all of the talk shows out there spouting negative topics? The subject matter on these kind of shows is often sickening. But people watch them. I am not one of them because I choose not to watch. It is that simple. I don't watch what I don't want to see.

But your dilema is with the commercial that you can't control coming on in the middle of a program you deemed acceptable.

That is a tough one.
