Default Bear Strategies

So what I am thinking is a couple weeks before the season, I will head out to the area I am going to hunt. I will put out a 5 gallon bucket of meat scraps. Hang it from a tree so the bear can't actually get the bait.

Then I will climb a tree or hang out on a distant hiding place that I can see the bait really well. I will sit there and watch for the better part of the day and hope some bear show up.

That way I could get a good idea of what the area has. Then when spring bear opens I have a good idea of what bear are in the area.

Is all this legal? According to what I can see it is.

The way I read the reg's, unless that 5 gallon bucket is hanging around your neck it is still baiting. Hope I am wrong because I would like to do the same type of locating thing.

A Co-worker and future hunting buddy of mine saw a scent candle thing at the last sportsmans show. I want to light one of those and see what might come in from down wind. Did anybody see these at the show? Do you know the guys name? He was out of So. OR somewhere on the Umpqua R. I think.

Thanks,

Mark

Maybe a trail camera would be good too.

Read the Regs

I beleive even the candle could be considered baiting (unless you are hand carrying it while you hunt).

The best, legal method that I have heard of being used out here is calling. You need to know when, where and how - in order to be effective. I am still learning.

I was told years ago that "burning honey" was a good attractant. I guess you can use a small sterno burner and an old soup can. Just fill the soup can about half way up with honey. It will actually boil and put off a sent they can't refuse for quite a few hours. I was told this is also a good way to give yourself time to sneek around and get behind them and not just sit and wait. Never tried it, but makes sense???

The regs say you can not hunt an area sooner than 24 hours after all the bait has been removed. Or something like that. I think I would be legal.

I think you'd be pushing it by baiting, even though you aren't actually hunting. Otherwise, a guy could setup a full-blown baiting station and then pull it down the night before season. Bears would still come in for a few days, not knowing the station was gone.

Find an area that has berries. It will have bears. Look for scat and it will tell you whether or not there are big bears in the area as scat size is synonomous with bear size.
