Default Bow Hunters

Hey all, I just got my first bow. A el cheapo PSE Nova that I figure will get me started in the sport till I can afford better. My question to all of you is what is your pre-shot routine? I know that you're sopposed to get a good routine going to help you shoot consistantly. I have only shot twice, last weekend and today and I think I am getting a good steady routine going. Just looking for helpful hints and some new Ideas.

Hard to explain my routine it just happens after a while and you will find some way that works best for you. Try going to some of the weekend
3-D shoot and watch the other people out there and most of all take your time and enjoy yourself.

Bow shootin is a blast

You kinda develope your own pattern. I try to look for 3d hunts on the weekends. After January, I shoot every weekend just about.
I try wierd angles too, on my knees on a hill side, etc.
Get yourself a good target and abuse it.

If you have time try to shoot 2-4 times a week now. Stay with the 20 yards shots until you get comfortable with it. Then move on, the longer shots take a lot of practice. I would say when you can hit the longer yards with little struggle then you can move onto the 3D range. Just take you time and make sure you have fun.

As has been said your anchor point is very important for a cosistant shot. Most of the pros use the tip of the nose. You may want to adjust your draw to let it rest on the nose or (if you use a release) a "D" loop can lengthen your draw 1/2 of an inch. Again its been said but its worth saying again. Focus on the shot and follow through. Don't initially focus on being accurate, that will come with good form and practice.

I had a problem with clenching the bow with each shot making me shot to the right and down. I solved this with a string aound my arm and I shoot with my hand open and let the bow fall forward after the shot.

I work out my back muscles (Lats) year round so I can shoot without a problem. Too many hunters get tired after 20 shots. I'll sometimes shoot a few hundred in a day in June and July before season starts.

Its all about the follow through, man. Especially on longer shots if you dont hold your bow in the shooting position your arrows will really drop off and be inconsistent.

Get good technique, add good technology, and you can be a scary good shot. The real 'edge' is getting confident in your shot, knowing you're going to kill it, and that comes only from shooting lots and lots.

Good for you though, its only February and you're starting. Most guys dont get rolling until July.

The best advice I think you can get is to go to a reputable bow shop and ask for 1 hour (or more) of instruction.

I shot and hunted pretty successfully for about 4 years then bought a new bow. I was going to be in some very remote areas solo. I wanted to be able to strip the bow in the field, replace the string (which on my bow does not require a press) and be able to tune and adjust every aspect.

I payed Leroy at Archers Afield for an hour of instruction. Absolutely the best money I had spent. From form, anchoring, arrow tuning, rest adjustments etc.. It was Cheep!

Your buddies can get you going, and modern archery eqipment is very forgiving, but an hour of good instruction now is a lot better than learning bad habits.

I echo getting some professional instruction to start, habbits like target panic will plague you for a lifetime if they get started.

And yes followthrough is the most important. My dad pounded it into my head..."Keep that pin on the target until the arrow hits!!!!!"

Kutch archery is the way to go.

This year I had a deer standing out a ways "unaware" I was there. I had spent many hours practicing at Kutch. I guessed the yardage of that deer at 40yds. After the shot I ranged the distance 41yds. I regularly practice at ranges of 60yds not to shoot that far but to make 40yd shots easy. 3D shooting really really helps.

I use the word LEAF, this assumes you have already estimated your yardage and know what pin you will be using.

Lift
Elbow
Anchor
Follow through

Thanks for all the reply's, lots of helpful advice. I knew I could count on the great people here to get me going in the right direction. Could anyone give me some directions to get to Kutch's achery, I have some buddies from work that go out there but they can't give me detailed directions and they all are "to busy" to go with me. I really like the idea of a 3-D range to help me get a feel for judging distance and maybe putting me in real world shot situations. Is there any 3-D ranges a little closer to portland, Yamhill is about 45-hour away from me. Thanks again for all the reply's, I am heading out now to blue lake to fling a hundred or so arrows.

Steelie Ben...

I try to shoot out there every Wednesday night, and Fridays if possible. My daughter (6 years old) shot in a kids' league last night, she had a blast!!

Can't say enough good things about Kenny and Ruth!

As for directions... Put it into Yahoo! Maps, I did for Newberg to the shop (hope you can make it to Newberg , click on this link: Kutch's Archery

That should get ya there. There's a 3-D shoot March 13 & 14th. If we get a chance to get my wife's other pins somewhere close before then...we'll be shooting in it. Just for fun, we certainly aren't very good!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">What he said  . Leroy is great instructor . Also, go to as many 3D shoots as you can and shoot with the gear you are going to use during hunting season.

Remember that this is bowhunting, not rifle. If you want to impress your buddies, a 10 or 20 yard broadside is way more respectable than any 50 yard shot anyday. Get good and stay good, you owe it to the critter you are trying to put in the freezer.
