Default Question #1. What to drag behind the boat .......

Guys, I am going to the Abacco Islands in Late March. I have rented a 41 foot sailboat and plan to spend the week cruising the islands and some open ocean as well.

I am going to take one of my clamp on pole holders and drag something behind the boat. Does anyone have any suggestion on what I should try down there?

May I be the first to suggest ME!! At this point being keelhauled in the bahamas IS a vacation!!!

try a a few of the core tuna lures...mexican flag, purple and black and zuchini in both feathers and cedar plugs...might even take a few swimbaits just for the fun of it. Oh, by hte way I have NO idea as Ive never been there, thats just what I would think of for the conditions.

Rather than use the rod holder I'd use a 1" wide nylon strap with 2 heavy snaps on it, wrap the strap around the stern rail and snap the clips to the reel.

For lures I would take,

ZTWF Large Zuker Tuna Feather
1-Black and Purple
1-Mexican Flag Zuker

260MM Yo-Zuri "Bonita" or 10.5" (#914) Braid "Marauder"
1-"Tony the Tiger" (Yo-Zuri) or "Flaming Trout" (Braid)
1-Black and Purple

And for grins and gigles I'd take one each of the 7' Braid Blade Runners (again in Black and Purple and Orange and Yellow) as well as a few assorted wahoo bombs for casting.

Flaming Trout Marauder

Black and Purple Marauder

Braid Blade Runner

Bring a steelhead rod and a couple packages of Sabiki rigs so you can catch your own bait. Whenever your in sailing mode and going relatively fast, the bonita and mauraders will the the go to lures. Wahoo love em. I would bring a couple of rods.

The Abaco islands int he bahamas will hold alot of Wahoo, there is a wahoo tourney there every year and 150 pounders are caught often.

Hoo's are one of the fastest fish in the ocean. Quoted off a Fl fishin forum. "They can spool 350 yds of line in 30 - 40 seconds with 30 lbs of drag on 'em"

Bring some inshore gear as well. Most cruising, you spend painfully little time out over the blue water. You won't be sorry if you have a bunch of fishtraps with you and a 20-30 pound outfit. Just be careful about eating reef fish. I hear Ciguatera is no fun. Buy a Cigua-Check if you want to eat any.
