Usually around February is a good time for Herring in Newport. last year sucked for Herring but hopefully it will be better this year. The only thing about February herring is that they are spawning so they are either full of eggs or the other stuff . Normally you can pick up good numbers of nice herring all through the summer months. In the summer they come and go but when you get them they are nice and firm.

In the winter I usually do best around the international docks in Newport. Through the summer we tend to do better around the green can out in front the CG station.

twinpwered, Use the Search at the top of the page in the Salty Dogs going back a year or so. Use "Yaquina Herring" as the search words.
Sometime between now and the last part of Feb. is when the spawners come in.

Is one type of herring jig better than another? I jigged about four different trips last year. All I got was a baby sculpin??? I could sure use a few dozen fresh Yaquina Herring!

Sabiki Rigs work good. They have them at the Marina Store, Fuel Dock and some of the Local Tackle Stores

Thanks Salty! I will give it another try this year. Maybe last year was just a bad year for herring...
