Halibut fishing close?
I do not know anything about halibut fishing but would like to try it. Are many fish caught close in to shore? I have had a problem getting sick and have not foud the magic cure or mix for myself. I would like to get out and try it but I dont want to ruin someone elses day on the ocean listening to me puke. I have a 19' Hewes sea runner and a 115 merc 2 stroke with a new 9.9 big foot kicker so I can run out a little ways. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks, Mike

Re: Halibut fishing close?
Out of Newport you can pick up fish pretty close. I would figure around 13 miles in July and August. In May, June and September the fishing at the pile can be slower so it’s off to the ranch but that’s probably farther than you want to go.
Either find someone experienced to go with you or go with someone experienced at the port that you intend to frequent. And make SURE you have all the right safety gear. Do a search there has been lot’s of lists made

Re: Halibut fishing close?
So the Halibut move in closer during the summer? Are they spawning then or what?

Re: Halibut fishing close?
The summer hopefully will provide you a day or two with weather that co-operates and allows you out to chase halibut.

Re: Halibut fishing close?
Flapbreaker... to answer your question no they are not spawnning. They spawn in water 1200 ft and deeper, in November and December.
The little ones are carried by the currents to the NW, when they hit the bottom they generally migrate SW...back to the place origin.
In the spring they move in and start their feeding migration, and then drop off the edge again in the fall.

i guess close is a relative term. but i think if puking is involved 13 is the same as 60.

Well sometimes there is fish closer that 13 miles but you would have to talk to Wak about that.

Or you can eat razor clams everyday for a month right up until they find out they are too high in Domoic Acid. Like Wak. This combination as well as living within spitting distance of the Ocean gave Wak Butt-Vision. It allowed him to peer down in the water and see them laying on the bottom.

Re: Halibut fishing close?
Its pretty hard to get one up on Walter. Everytime I go to the boat launch I always find his empty trailer, I am beginning to think you never go home.
Does Domoic acid have anything to do with hair loss ??? if it does we have a problem Houston.
It is hard to believe that last year we were bottom fishing this week in short sleeve shirts on a calm ocean. )what a difference a years makes) Watching those crabbers this week has been pretty entertaining...eek!
Walter we need to worry about getting a freezer full of bait... I think we spent more on bait then gas last year.

Re: Halibut fishing close?
Yes, lots of GPS coordinates on Hunting Fishing News. I was particularly interested in a spot NW of the banana reef.
190 fathoms. Who the heck fishes halibut in 190 fathoms with 48 ozs. of lead. Maybe that is where the big ones are??? Anyone out there ever fish in over 1000 ft. for halibut?? Bait checks would be hell!!!!! Maybe I am just a Wimp....

Re: Halibut fishing close?
Wak gave me a few numbers last year and I did really well inside 40 fathoms. I might be stalking him this year though. I know he has a few more tricks up his sleeve!

Re: Halibut fishing close?
The depth of the garibladi hole is greatly exaggerated. The top of it is about 680-720' depending on whose electronics you believe. You definitely need 1000' to get to the bottom, but it's no 1000' straight down.

Re: Halibut fishing close?
When I was there the day of the tournament I had slightly over 800' metered. A very flat area, that is what part I saw of it. A long way down there.

For me,if there a legal fish on the end, its great.
If its just the same herring, shad, etc I sent down untouched. Then its a pain.
