Just curious how everybody uses there percentage tags books out there (for those of you that use them). This will be my second year hunting, i used the book last year to find some good hunts that i would have a high percentage of drawing with 0 points and dindt pay much attention to the harvest percentages.

This year I may do the same or actually look into it a little deeper. How accurate are those percentages, since they are from 2000, can you get any information from them other than the % of successfull hunts there were in 2000?

I guess you can look at it in 2 ways.
#1, there was a 65% success rate in 2000 that must be a good area to hunt, or...
#2, there was a 65% success rate in 2000 there probably arent any deer left in that area now.

Any thoughts out there floating around???

Been buying them for 5 years now. Have absolutely zero complaints! I love the books. A couple years ago I started looking at trends in the various units I want to hunt and am seeing some units with harvest success rising and others I thought would have been really good actually getting lower results year after year.

The books are nice, the guys who make it are nice but why spend money when you can get it for free

I guess I am cheap, but I go to the ODFW office every year and they hand you all the same info in a stapled packet for all the hunts FOR FREE. Of course you have to do the math. When they say 1000 people with 4 preference points applied for a certain hunt and 100 of them received tags, you have to figure out it was a 10% draw rate with 4 points

Bait thanks for the info. I knew the ODFW would provide the data but had no idea they actually would compile it for you. I thought you would have to ask about each specific hunt. I still like the percentage tags and for $13 bucks I don't have to do the math. An interesting idea is to compare the differnt years draw results. Many hunts are moving targets they are always 1 point away no matter how long you have been applying.

I will not waste another dime on it, There book said I should have a 100% draw for elk last year with 2 points, zippo, zero, nada,. I even called ODFW to make sure my party had a 2 point average. As someone else said you can request the hunt data from ODFW, it is not as neatly compiled, but it is free. I will admit I drew my antelope tag using it.

Kevin, I was studying the harvest success trends too....but they are having trouble getting the info. from the dfw and therefore it's outdated. I don't have the book in front of me but I think it's from 2000 or 2001 in the 2004 book.

The Blue mountian monitor has some success stats. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/w-w/rog/hunting/2003w-w.pdf

You have to extrapolate the stats but they are contained within for eastside units.

ODFW and WDFW both post harvest results (by unit) on their websites (wdfw is better and more up to date). This does not give you the application information you need, but you can look at more harvest results than just the year of publication.
