Waterfowl with a bow ?
Does anyone hunt Ducks and Geese with a Bow ?
Might be kind of fun ? I suppose you'd want to pick a place to have all to yourself ?

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
Tred Barta did it on OLN a few weeks ago. He used flu-flu feathers.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
...and I feel it's time to point out yet again that Mr. Barta relieved himself in his waders while sea duck'n. Not to mention almost loosing his dog, loosing several gang lines, and generally being somewhere he shouldn't.
Don't get me wrong, I watch and enjoy most of his stuff, but that episode was just looney!
When he was bow hunting those geese, the didn't take one home. I'm guessing it would be quite a challenge.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
I have see too many pictures in the front page of ducks or geese running around looking like Steve Martin. I personaly don't think it's a good idea.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
it can be done. I wouldnt use flu-flu arrows and i would use a broadhead of somekind. I think it would be best done by an instinctive shooter with a recurve or long bow.
I know that they have done it out at Burbank Goose a few times with success.
If i had a good enough field with a lot of geese using it I think it would be awesome.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
I'll post pictures as soon as I do it. WE have been talking about it all season and it will be done in the next few weeks. I know people who have done it with success.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
Evan...you gotta do it in the air....the ground pound don't count. I have fired at least 6 arrows at flying geese...all last season. No success...yet.
Feb. is the month for that.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
I seen a Turkey head the other day. It looked like a broadhead but not so broad and the shaft section looked really jagged. I bet it would do the job ?

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
Jon, Does it count if the rest of the flock is flying? I am thinking honkers just about to touch down. If I can get to full draw just before they start to park, that nice big breast would make a great target. You know when they just kind of hang there for a second with there neck bent way over. Take 'em!!!

If you read closer....you'll see that comment was directed at Evan. And I was actually just giving him a little crap....maybe I should have added one of these... .
I still think getting one on the ground is cool, but in the air would be a trophy for sure. Good Luck when you try for it.
(I've taken my bow several times, along with the scattergun, but it is so hard to pick up the bow when they are right in your face, decoying in. I've shot my shotgun several times with my release still wrapped around my wrist )

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
Yes: I use my 8 year old with a wonder bread bag waving as a decoy then I chime in with my call -here gooosey, gooosey, goosey, works wonders on the tualitin through stafford I recomend a carp style set up when targeting the locals.

No, he stabbed a pig someone else was holding for him. If he had done it by himself I would have more respect for him. Sorry all you Ted Barta fans, but that guy is really arrogant and rubs me the wrong way .
Shooting a goose with a bow would be a neat trick, but I think the odds of wounding one are pretty high. I wouldn't try a shot at a running deer with a bow and I think a flying goose would be harder .

I've had grouse fly off with an arrow in them before. I'd fully expect a goose to be able to do the same. Have someone with a shotgun prepared to act as backup just in case. I will make the selfless offer to act as that backup.

Re: Waterfowl with a bow ?
I have shot geese out of the air with a bow. You have to use broadheads. Never wounded one but out of the 5 I have shot with a bow they all took a broad head. The doucks and geese you see with arrows sticking out of them were shot with a field tip. That dosn't work even on grouse. for phesants broad heads are a must also. They dont have to be spendy ones just cheep homemade Trade pionts do the trick
